McCloughan is in no position to limit ANYBODY's touches. He is not a coach.

Its amazing to me that guys who have been football fans forever and 9er fans at that would be so star struck by these flash in the pan players. I remember the glory days with a stud at every position but nothing too flashy. Why would you guys want a big play guy and be deficient in other areas? I could careless about an 80 yard play if your not putting up consistent points. They shouldnt pick up a RB in this draft unless hes a KR and its 3 RD or later.
Gore's a work horse for sure but when his contract is up at the end of 2011 he'll be 29 years old. It's not too early to re-stock the stable . . . even if it's a first rounder.
here is the flaw with this.
Lets say Spiller is the perfect replacement for Gore. So Gore continues to be bad ass, and then a bit later Spiller is just as awesome as he replaces him.
So how did we win more games? Of course I am only assuming that is your goal.
If the current holes around Gore are such that his individual prowess can't help us win games, what purpose does it serve to find his replacement?
Yes the goal is to win games and make the playoffs. If we were to draft Spiller, AND Gore remained productive for the last two years of his deal, why does that mean Spiller still can't help us win games during that time? Spiller could still have a significant impact with the return game, or playing some slot WR, or if Gore goes down for a couple of games, as he has for the last three seasons.
I guess my point is that I don't view Spiller as a luxury pick. If he's the best player on the board with either of our first rounders we should jump on him because I think he can help us win games.
My point is that the 9ers will have a better chance replacing bums now then to draft backups in the first round. Next year they can use the 32nd overall pick(haha) on a RB that is a little more hardnosed then spiller.

Sing also talked on KNBR or whatever about strengthening the RB position with another type of back and getting a RT to help the running game. There's a thread in the draft forum or whatever on it. I would guess that they've talked this over. You forget that they work together?

What Mac's saying is he wants Gore fresh for the playoffs...you can get that if you make sure Coffee and whatever other RB he acquires gets some meaningful carries. It also diversifies your offense...gives opponents different looks, all of which are good. Our offense was far too predictable last year...and that has to change. I think new OL Coach's Solari and Brown will really make a difference....of course, that'll mean some good young talent to work with, too. You need look no further than LT to see what happens to even the best RB's when they get too many carries...they simply get pounded down to become shells of their former selves.

If he's sharing carries with Spiller, I'm fine with this. He better get the majority of the carries though.

Don't be foolish. I have no doubt Scott has input that affects games. They work as a team, and if they don't then we are headed for more mediocrity.

If we get Spiller, I don't think he'll ever get more than 5 carries a game. Gore will probably have somewhere around 20.

I have a feeling that all you fans that want Spiller are going to really disappointed when McClueless passes on him.

There will be some good outrage that day. I think many people will say bad things about McClueless.
