My Take on Alex Smith

look at his game logs, youll see the real picture.

@HOU he had a 118.6 QB rating

@GB was 88.8

JAX was 96.6

@SEA was 95.6

DET was 97.5

@STL was 97.6

he had a few stinkers, but if you remove his 2 worst games, which came back to back in the AZ and PHI games, his QB rating jumps up to 89.1, which wouldve ranked 13th just below Donovan McNabb, and just above Joe Flacco.

im not making excuses for his 2 horrible games, but he did alot better than people are giving him credit for. he was getting absolutely thrashed in the Lions and Rams games by all the zoners, yet he had a 97.5 and 97.6 passer ratings in those games. being picked 1st overall has made it so now he has to lead us to a SB to gain the fans support, which is ridiculous.
ridiculously high expectations comes with the territory for being the 49ers QB. remember Steve Young was criticized endlessly until he finally won a superbowl.

in the NFL, and in the 49ers fanbase especially, QB's and Head Coaches take WAY too much of the blame.

the saying goes "coaches and qb's get too much credit when you win, and too much blame when you lose", but i dont want to insinuate that joe montana and bill walsh took too much credit for winning.
I am an Alex Smith fan. I agree with everything you have said, good and bad. It makes sense. He has made dramatic improvement last year and expect him to be better next season. He will start hitting the deep ball with the reciever catching it in stride more often, he just needs to build that sort of trust with his recievers first. The other thing that he will improve this offseason are those intermediate throws, this will improve his yards per completion average which should translate to not having to face as many third downs or third and long's as they have been. I expect this offense to be ranked in the middle of the pack come the end of next season and with our defense making huge strides I believe we not only make it into the playoffs in 2010 and I believe we will go deep into the post season barring no significant injuries and a few changes along the O-line.

Very true. Smith haters want the 9ers QB to be an All-Pro from the start. We got a good QB in Smith who is actually improving in his three healthy seasons playing despite the fact that the 9ers organization did all it could to hinder his development (difference offensive systems, OCs, horrible oline, etc.)

Smith is starting to look alot like David Carr in his time in Houston. The poor guy was molested for years by an horrible oline and will never recover. Smith has done very well this year but he rushes his throws even when he does have time in the pocket, which is not very often. My biggest problem with Smith is that he hardly ever runs, he has good legs but like in the Rams game when we had a 3rd and 2, he had a lane open to run at least 10-15 yards but he made the difficult throw in coverage incomplete. He does not want to run and that tells me he is afraid to get injured. I can understand that but use your legs man. Smith will be under so much pressure next year to perform that we will soon know, early next season if he can do it. The biggest question now to me is, What happens if Sam Bradford is still there at 13?

Good point. I think if Smith does two things he'll be in the top 10-15 QBs in the league at least:

1) Stop locking his front leg. He doesn't do that as much but it still gets him at times

2) Run with the ball when there is no one open and there is a place to run.

If he would get guys like Davis from Rutgers and Iupati from Idaho, he would feel pretty good in the pocket.
Thank you for the foorball Talk.
Great assessment of Alex Im glad he is getting a fair shot. lets see what happens next year I do believe that we have a QB for the future. Nate let him sit and learn joe sat and watched Deburg. steve sat and watch joe so lets learn from our history and give alex this fair shot and if he falls in his face i will be yelling bust but not until then got to go to work now s
The problem with Alex Smith is that he is tooo damn good. He needs to play down to everyone else so it can click
I think alot of the negativity towards A Smith comes because of his record...but then when you look at his record year 1 Not even J Montana could have done much with that team...They were LUCKY to not be the Lions of 2008.
Year 2 in comes N Turner as OC and A Smith goes from 1 TD - 11 Ints to 16 & 16 And had the defense held the Rams at the end of the game the Niners go 8-8 but they ended up going 7-9 still a HUGE Improvement. Year 3 A Smith does ok and then gets his shoulder ripped apart and then gets critisized by the coach for basically being a softie...comes back because of that TOO early and has a rough year because he still was hurt. (And people wondered why he would fludder balls) Year 4 he's on IR so you cant say he had a good or bad year. Year 5 (2009) He trhows for 2200 yd 18 TD and 12 Int. and thats NOT a full season take in the full season and his numbers look like 3000 yds 24TD and 17 Ints Are those bad numbers?

Thing is So many niners fan had labeled him a bust cause of his rookie season cause ever since that season his stats have improved...except his 1 season he was injured...

This reminds me of the 1st year S Young started for the niners EVERYONE was on his butt saying this guy was a lousy QB he'd never get the team to the SB even the year they went to the SB in 94 he was getting ripped at the beginning of the year.

But it all comes down to this... All the A Smith Bashers that think he was a Bust after his rookie year what would you have thought of J Montana had he been on that same team looking just as bad...Would you all be calling Montana a Bust? I know your answers nevermind and it's NOT the truth.
An interesting and adult discussion! Any qb we have is going to need a better line (and line coach). So even if we drafted the qb of our dreams, I don't think he gets any playing time next year whilst we put together a line which will work. And as this does not appear to be a qb draft for the ages, and as FA is likely to disappoint, it seems sensible to me to let our 25 year old qb start next year and meantime get some serious practice time with Crabtree and Davis, to name but two.

I would hope that by the middle of next season we will have at worst an NFL average O line. And we can see how it all pans out then.

Memo to team: Next time you rebuild, START with the lines!
I truly believe that with a full offseason as the #1 he will make giant strides next year. The chemistry with Crabtree was definitely off on many throws, that takes time. With a better oline this offense is on its way.

I really think we'll be better than 8-8 next year. I'd definitely invest in them making the playoffs next year. Firing Raye and starting someone other than Smith will guarantee us another losing season in my opinion.

Dock you had me laughing with this one. I like Alex Smith but I think he doesn't have the natural feel to play quaterback position. He has only thrown for one three hundred yard game in the nfl. we should have never gave our 1st rounder to new england for joe staley. We could have gotter joe flacco in the first and desean jackson in the second instead of kentwan balmer and chilo richal. Until we get some one who can see talent I am sorry to say we will never get beyond an average at best team.
