With the "spread" it does two things to a defense:
1. removes one LB and substitutes a CB to guard the slot receiver. One less man from the box.
2. places the SS to help in the deep zone to accomodate for three receivers. One less man from the box.
So with six in the box, it will be even blocking (six defenders = five olinemen +TE) so if the six offensive players in the box hold their blocks, Gore should be in the second level everytime.

Gore will be effective this year out of any formation. After watching him in interviews he looks frustrated and a frustrated athlete is usually a very dangerous weapon the field. That being said, the shotgun is a difficult package to run from. It limits a lot of what you can do.
However, next year we will 'open up' the offense but it won't be from the gun. The only reason we're in shotgun this year is because our line cannot protect at all. It has nothing to do with Alex not seeing the field or anything else.

The problem wasn't ever 8 or 9 in the box. The problem that he has no holes to run through because our C/G combinations can't seal anyone off.

!!
Absolutely the truth here and exactly what I've been saying. Every time Alex dropped back, he was already being hit or pressured. When in the gun, he has time to find receivers, and does. Our Line is bad, and if we can get it fixed, we will see more of the O, if not, well, probably just more of the spread.

What! How can you say that? 8 and 9 men in the box can be hard for any RB!

No, it's hard but they were stacking it in 2006 when Norv Turner was our OC. He negated it with Larry Allen and a very solid run blocking line.
I still hate Norv for what he did to us. He set the franchise back 3 years IMO and stunted Alex Smith's growth like a 30 foot cigarette. I'm really glad my buddy rammed his daughter and never called her back. hehehehe
High five!

I agree, Fwank is too good to not be part of any offense.

What people dont relize is the spread isn't permenent it's until we have all the parts (linemen) to be able to be a power running team because thats still how mike singletary is. And why hes a good coach, hes flexable

Naw what he means is that teams don't stack the box againstvthe Niners they simply just beat the niners poor o line.
Gotta find a way where Alex can at least be functional under center so they can mix up packages to really keep the defenses off balance. the best formation for Frank will be the double TE set. Plus the spread takes away screen plays to Gore.

We have to add how stellar of a blocker Gore is. Sure it's not adding to any of his stats, but its better for the team as a whole, and Gore is fine by that, he's no selfish player

I agree. Not sure where ppl are getting there information from but the spread can end up being very effective for Gore (or any RB). Teams such as the Pats, Saints and Colts run often out of the spread and with good success esp. at the end of games when chewing up the clock. The shotgun gives EVERY QB an extra second and more vision to see the field from and more room to avoid knock-down passes. It's also unpredictable and deceptive. B/c the defenses are always pass rushing, they wear down rarely getting to the QB. These teams also run MANY screen-passing out of the spread, something we can take advantage of with Gore. As mentioned before, the spread is just that - it spreads the defense out and Frank can run out of the gun and with our crappy line, every run is also like a delay, buying the linemen that extra second to open up holes. And those holes should be open d/t less men in the box. Out of the spread, for Frank, it should be see-hole, hit-hole no matter where it is (in between the tackles, outside, etc.) and really play to his natural ability. He's a patient runner and I think allowing the linemen that extra second could bode well for Gore in the end. He just has to get used to it and get a feel for it and he'll get his yards; lots of them!

Teams will prepare for an air assault , then we can switch it up to RAYE ver.1, and run it down their throats.
I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE SPREAD AND THE NEW JIMMY RAYE!

Agree, I think Gore can rack up a ton of all-purpose yards!
