I like that, agreed!!

Agreed. Trying to find the right fit.

We've got the TE's, the RB (at least the starter), and perhaps the QB now.

What we need is to find the right OL, and we need to play better 3rd down defense. We a better pass-rush and better safety help.

We can't just shuffle what we have and get better. They tried that this off-season and the O-line is still horrible if not worse than last year.

If Smith pans out at QB, we still need an OG to replace bass, an OT to replace Sims/Pashos/Snyder, and a 3rd and more reliable backup RB. If Smith doesn't pan out, you can add Franchise QB to that list.

Lewis is likely done and needs to be replaced and the jury is still out on Goldson, we still need a legitimate passrusher and another active DT/DE to help Justin Smith in the middle. On Special Teams: Arnaz Battle is not the answer and never was so we'll need to find another PR/KR to replace Rossum.

Those are a lot of positions to fill and they are basically all the same ones we needed to address at the end of last year. McCloughan is just not getting it done. If he stays at GM we will be rebuilding for-e-verrrr.

Has McCloughan done a good enough job picking up talent? I don't think so.

Do you trust him to fix our roster woes in the off-season? I don't.

We need a GM who can get us past this perpetual rebuilding mode and I don't think that guy is McCloughan.

we are def not in rebuilding mode. we have some holes yes but a couple are surprises that we thought would be better going into the season. we are def here to compete this year and we will win the NFC West.
We are missing a:
Dominate pass rusher which may not be 100% needed
S
OL help-we have a cpl pieces w/Heitman,Staley we need to give Rachal time to develop
we may have found our QB today with Smith's impressive performance remember this kid is what 25-26 still very young and lots of tools.
we found our #1 WR today
VD has proved he is a big time TE this year
Gore is an elite RB
Willis is an elite LB/defesive player
J.Smith is a probowl level DE
T.Spikes/N.Clements are very good/close to pro bowl vets
A.Fanklin is very underrated at DT
D.Goldston is starting to show something at S
Morgan is showing something at WR
A.Lee/J.Nedney are top level K/P
M.Norris is a very good pure FB
K.Balmer has alot of potential and needs time to develope
this thing is coming together we do need a few things on the roster and we need Sing/Sullivan/Raye to do a better job w/the WR's and bench Bruce/Battle and play Jones/Hill. we also need to figure out a quick fix on the OL for the rest of this season (Runyon to RT, Snyder ft at RG until Pashos comes back, Wraage to LG)
playoffs this year, add a nice FA or 2, get an awesome draft class w/2 1st round picks in a really deep draft and compete for real next year.
Yes we are. I cant believe how duped people are by this guy. Reminds me of the comment by BW made about Steve DeBerg "Good enough to get you beat". In McCloughan's case, he gets the players that are good enough to get you beat.
Until we get 2 starting OL in the draft, and FA an all pro OL, yes we are.

Spot on.

Priority #1 has to be the OL. I will be extremely pissed if we don't come out of the 2010 draft with at least 3 OL. The line is an area that is one of the poor marks on Scot's resume - although I think he has done a pretty decent job.

QB is up in the air. Smith was great today, but I would like to see him play well when a team game plans for him. Nate Davis is an encouraging prospect.

One spot where I disagree with you is with Goldson. He's struggled. He's not a very good cover safety. I think that he's more suited for the SS, as it appears that M. Lewis is on his last games.

I still like our pass rush. It could be better but it's much improved. I still need to see the rest of the season to evaluate it further. Presently, it's a middle of the pack pass rush IMO - you can still have an elite defense with a middle of the pack pass rush.
We had two weeks to prepare for the AVERAGE Texans, and we lose.
The official term would be "back to rebuilding".

Also, if AZ wins tonight at NY, the most likely scenario would be SF at 3-4, and AZ at 5-3.

I think we are still rebuilding but we are a whole lot better than we were in 2005. Davis is starting to fulfill his promise, Lawson is effective but not stellar, Crabtree is doing well in his first game, Balmer and McDonald have promise, Willis great, and Goldson, Brown, Smith are all coming on the backfield. Lots of potential but clearly we have some major holes to fill - especially on the oline. If Smith and Davis pan out we will have a good QB system, need help in the RB area, and definitely need a solid pass rusher in the OLB - maybe Brooks/Briggs will fill that one for us. But I am happy to see significant progress.
I believe the major obstacle to this team is McCloughan. He has had five years to put a great OL in place and it still is a major weakness. At least three of the five slots are not performing where we need them. With a good OL the QB and RB casn perform at their optimum.

As for ST, I constantly see kick and punt returners on other teams that are quick and elusive. Most were little low draft picks or FAs. McCl could have picked up any of them, but did not. What is wrong with this guy?

He has had way too many misses on draft choices and FAs and far too many high first rounders who have failed to display the production commensurate with such a high pick.

So, I hate to say it, but as long as McC is here, we may always be in rebuilding mode.
i think its miore of a fine tuning. most of the pieces are in place. we definitely need another OT and possibly a guard, chilo will develop but i dont think theyll resign baas. we need another safety because M Lewis is at the end of his career with all these concussions. we DEFINITELY need a return man and an insurance policy for frank gore. and the ever so elusive pass rushing OLB. we have the WR's even though we will probably lose battle, bruce and possibly spurlock this year the nucleus is there in crabtree, morgan, hill and jones. we have a legit TE who's looking like the very best in the league right now. the question to me on offense is the QB, if smith continues to play like he played today and with Davis waiting in the wings, we dont have to blow a pick on a QB and we can get an O lineman, OLB, Safety or a triple threat PR/KR/RB like spiller or best in the draft. we are in really good shape, with next years draft and proper development we will be a top contender

and the same goes for our D-line

Holmgren anyone???? he just stated he would like a position similar to Parcell's.
I think our problems at offensive line are really hurting us. It's a pity too because we've invested so much in the O-line since McCloughan took over (Baas, Staley, Rachal, Snyder)... The offensive line makes the entire offense go, which keeps our defense off the field.

wasnt holmgren GM and Coach in seattle? i like him better as a coach than a GM
This franchise will be rebuilding as long as it does not have a strong football executive in the mold of Bill Polian or Bill Parcells. Scot Mcloughan is way over his head as a GM and he is the only football guy in the front office. Right now there is no vision or plan in the front office.
