Why do you say that? Elaborate if you can. The guy was projected to go in the 2nd round before the last two games he had at Ball State as well as some learning disability. He has a strong arm, accurate, and from what we've seen in preseason, he can make some good reads. If the coaches bring him up slowly, he can be a starter in this league.

I don't know, it's just a gut feeling. He has all the tools I guess I just don't feel it, though.
Nate the Great Hopefully...

How many quarterbacks drafted in the 5th round have gone on to be elite QB's?

The only ones that I can find are 1944- Bob Waterfield, and 1993- Mark Brunell (although I don't think you can count Brunell as elite).

Oh, and of course 2009- Nate Davis.
I really like Nate Davis.....he's mobile and HE CAN MAKE ALL OF THE THROWS. The guy has a cannon. He has the best arm by far of anyone on the team. He doesn't have any pressure on him by being drafted #1.....and he isn't being thrown into the fire like Alex. He was rated with all of the top qbs in the draft except for the last couple games he melted down, and he also told the teams he had a learning disability. And he is good size too. 6 2 220, he is a little shorter than ideal but he has enough weight on him and he's mobile too.

But Nate Davis was a brilliant pick by scott and he has a whole year to learn the offense. It was Walsh's philosophy to draft a qb every couple of years (not #1 but later in the draft) and develop him which is smart. Why spend another 1st round pick on a qb? It would have be interesting to see if the Niners would have drafted Sanchez if he was availalbe though at 10? I know they liked him.

The key is the offensive line. If WE can solidify the line, all of our quarterbacks will look much better as well as the offense. We are still one of the youngest teams in the league and we have spent picks on the line but it's not dominant as it should be.

Actually, Nate might have trouble saying those words.

I hope he ends up being great, but I'm not hopeful. I mean, if he ends up being our starter, what will we do to accommodate him? Pare down the playbook and strip it of all compound words so he can comprehend it?

Dude is also small. Some great players can overcome that, but I have seen nothing yet to suggest that he can.

And the laces . . . so strange.

Small?? 6'1" and 226lbs isnt that small !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does it matter how many were drafted in the 5th round? All it takes is one, and Davis could be that one. It just remains to be seen. Give him time to learn the offense, and we'll find out. Hopefully.

That's freaking hilarious.

Drew Bree's is 5'11 and like a hair under 6 feet. I remember when he threw a fit at his combine threatening to kill the official height measurer if he didn't list him at 6 ft.

It is impossible to say any rookie will never be a starter. One thing that is obvious is the 49ers gave him a roster spot because of how he played in preseason. There are always guys that come seemingly out of nowhere and take over a job when given the opportunity. Stranger things have happened than a 5th round draft pick becoming a starter after getting an opportunity. And out of all NFL teams, the 49ers are one where opportunity exists at the QB position. It is a job still waiting for someone to claim as their own.
