MD got a question for you. Ive been going over our WR list and have come up with a slight conundrum. Chances are we carry 5 or 6 WR's on the starting lineup, now looking over the issues at hand I think we will have to carry more. At this point WR's who could start if the season was tomorrow would be:
Morgan
Bruce
Battle
Hill
Zeigler
So that would be our starting 5 who are healthy, available, and know the offense. Those 5 would be the most effective who can contribute ASAP. With Jones out we cant place him on the PUP and he wont be ready until maybe week 4 but we have to keep him on the active roster, so that makes 6. Who knows when Crabtree signs could be tomorrow could be 3 weeks but he will be on the final 53 as well. He wont be game ready (in my opinion for at least a 4-6 weeks), so his chances of even being a factor wont be until maybe week 3-4 if not longer. My questions is can we even cut anybody? If week keep 6 and include Jones and Crabtree on that list we only have 4 guys who actually have a clue of what to do? I don't think that is a big enough safety net for us, we need to have at lest 5 who are game ready and competent of the playbook. So do we keep 7 WR's on the final 53......how does this get worked out?
We will carry 5 WR's into the season, and pick up Jones along the way. It really comes down to keeping two of the three WR's: Battle, Hill and Zeigler. As of the last report, Hill is the one struggling to make an impact this offseason, and I predicted this could be an issue earlier this summer.
Ultimately, the Niners will probably make the final decision based on special teams. Battle and Hill add special team value, but Zeigler does not. Teams need their 5th WR to add special team skills. Zeigler may, or may not, have practice squad eligibility.
Battle is more than likely on the back side of his career, but as stated numerous times this summer, he is a cockroach in a nuclear holocaust. I would never bet against him, even though many on this board put a fork into him before training camp began.
So by your prediction we go into the season with Morgan, Bruce, and ? as starters. Then we have Jones unable to play and Crabtree in limbo.
We will carry 5 WR's into the season, and pick up Jones along the way. So you mean we will have 6 WR's on the final roster not just 5? Hypothetically, if Crabtree holds out longer then expected what do you think will happen?
