I've got a five letter word for Brooks: "LOSER". Always has been, always will be.
Give me a guy with half the talent, and Brooks will still lose out to him. No heart. No passion.
And yet, Brooks is a board hero. If someone can explain that to me, I'd really appreciate it.
lol If he had no heart and passion, don't you think singletary would have cut him already?
Training camp isn't far away,he'll be gone by then....
Who's going to beat him out for a roster spot at OLB?
Jay Moore- definite no
Marques Harris- very small chance
They'll find someone
I can understand some guys have an agenda against Brooks. But he's by far the best depth we have behind Manny and Parys and he still can help us at ILB in case of injury.
Manusky has raved about Brooks in OTA's, he'll make the roster.
Have an agenda against him? HAHAHAHA
Name one thing that he's done in his NFL career.....ONE thing....hahaha
I don't think it's a matter of people having an agenda against him,I think it's a matter of people giving him any credit for anything at all.
Manusky has said good things about him all summer, from "he's a bright spot" at OLB to his most recent statement, quoted above by MB in his blog, about being a standout.
Brooks has apparently worked hard enough and shown enough determination to have stood out this off season, even earning praise. (He also earned some special attention from Singletary by missing a practice.)
He may well make it through TC, taking on Staley and M. Smith or Snyder. The test will come when he's thrown into a game and faces "live bullets." Then we'll see if he's got what it takes mentally as well as physically. IMHO.
Pre-season games will clearly tell us a bit more about Brooks
I hope Brooks does step up. TKO takes a pounding up the middle, and it will be good to have a big LB who can take the bruising to give him a break. It will take a while for McKillop to be ready to play any significant time.

It's called potential. Due to his size and athletic ability. This board clings to guys like that. See Manny Lawson and that other guy.

"Other guy". Hmm. You don't mean a tight end, perchance, do you?
Seriously, potential, athletic ability and size. Seems like 3 damn good reasons to be supporting Brooks, Lawson and Davis. Doesn't guarantee they will make it but it is as good a place as any to start

That's true but there have been alot of guys with "potential, athletic ability and size" that never really made it in this league. Or have never lived up to their billing despite the "potential, athletic ability and size" that they had.
At some point it's time to quit looking at what someone should be and start looking at what they are. We've had enough of a sample size of each (whether people want to believe this or not) to know exactly the type of players these guys are going to be.
Sure some players improve later than others. Those players atleast show glimpses of what they can be before they actually reach their "potential". Brooks, Lawson and the other guy has not done that.
I'm sure this post will result in a thread hijack and get me into a debate that i'm not looking forward to.

I hope both Smith and Brooks play great for the Niners. It will only make our team better.
My frustration with the board's fascination with Brooks comes down to his lack of hunger, desire, fight, scrappiness, whatever you want to call it. He has all the physical tools, and yet gets surpassed by far less athletically gifted players, who bust it on every snap. In fact, if the Niners had anyone of any marginal talent behind Haralson and Lawson, Brooks' days would be numbered. They might still be, even with our collection of no-name backups.
And fans support the slacker, the lazy player, the undisciplined fool on the football field? Why would anyone cheer an underachiever? That is something I will never understand.
For the record, I do not equate Smith with Brooks. Smith is a hard-worker, and willing to play through pain, and injury. As we know, two years ago, his arm was attached with duct tape, Lord Nolan criticized him, and a second doctor had to step in and reveal the severity of the damage. Smith was willing to take a massive pay cut to return, and swallow his pride at the same time. I'll take this guy in battle over an undisciplined underachiever, anyday.
One note on Lawson: The Niners have always attempted to shove him into a role that doesn't fit his skills. Manny is a 4-3 Sam backer. He needs to get into a Tampa-2 team, fly around the field, and make plays. Stacking him along the LOS is a big mistake, it always has been, and it always will be. Let the man run.
I think the Niners should have traded him to some team that can use his skills.

Why are people so sure that Brooks has loads of NFL talent? Has he even made a tackle in a preaseason game? If he was good Cincy would of kept him...

Um...so...when did Brooks sleep with your momma?
You know I'm just kiddin yah, MD.
I don't care if the guy slacks off or doesn't take things as serious as others ala Fred Dean. I just want this guy to go super hard about 7 plays a game and get at least 1 sack within those 7 plays.
As for Manny, I don't think he's quick enough for the Tampa 2.

Well, the 9ers claimed Brooks off waivers during the 2008 season...so Brooks was not even on 9ers team yet during the 2008 Pre-season.
Guess we simply just have to wait & see what Brooks does this 2009 Pre-Season.

Everyone at some point physically & mentally matures and finally see's the light given the time and proper direction. Singletary is the best thing that could have happened for Brooks.

There are a few explanations that stand out in my mind, one is latent homosexuality. Second, man crushes. Third, man crushes due to a player's natural athleticism that spiral out of control causing the psychologically not too savvy fan to experience delusional ideas of how a player will perform in the future or wild fantasies of a player's statistical potential. A fourth explanation is herd mentality.

Ahmad Brooks is a test case for Singletary's legendary motivational skills. I'm excited to see if he can make a difference with him. If the problem's in his head, then maybe Singletary is just what he needs.
