Wow, classy move on Lewis' part. Reminds me of the pay cut Ulbrich took when his LB role was diminished and he was mainly a ST player. Not to mention A. Smith took a pay cut, too (which could increase if he has a great season). Team players...
I was just going to say that 72

....You the man Michael Lewis

Awesome stuff... these types of players are few and far between. Hopefully the 9ers repay him by taking care of him if he has any concussion/head related problems in the future.
Hopefully he hangs it up after this year. I don't see why he needs to risk anything further. If he didn't have money saved up for retirement he wouldn't have taken this cut.

Probably knew that they would release him and knowing him and how long he's been her he doesn't want to leave (at least for this year). Definitely his last year here.

I honestly doubt that... he will be the starter at least for week one and probably half way through the season. I don't think they had plans to release him now but after next year no matter what they would have with him making 5.7 and 6.7 the two years after this. I assume this means no dead money for the next two years and frees more room for those 14 free agents next year. Also, saves us 2.45 this year.... that we wouldn't need but can put towards next year's free agents.

Think he will be in seattle as a secondary coach next year?
Glad he did that, now sign VD to an extension!

very classy, but don't assume you know what happened behind the scenes.
My guess? Baalke had a heart to heart with him and said "as of now, you're going to get cut. You're a great player, but this is a business, and it's a numbers game. We want you on the team this year, but we can't do it at that price. Here's what we need from you to make it happen. And it'll be a win for you too - play your heart out this year, and you'll land a nice deal next year from the highest bidder."

Exactly...I always admired Michael Lewis, but now it's obvious he is the ultimate team player, I too hope the front office takes care of this guy, he made a big sacrifice for the team, so I hope the Yorks remember this down the road

Agreed. Gives us more money for future players as well. Very classy. Kudos to Michael Lewis.

Maybe the fact that we drafted a hoss in Taylor Mays gave him the clue.
Really classy move by Mike.

real classy move by Michael. He probably knew his days are numbered cause of his concussions and didnt want the team to be screwed by dead money if he retires or is cut.

I think it's the complete opposite of that. This kind of thing typically happens after management tells the players agent that they need to take a pay cut if they want to make the 53 man. If he wanted out he could have resisted the restructuring and been on the street next Saturday.

and if there was any friction between him and the front office we would have heard about it on the zone, news like that always make it to the zone before it is published

Yes, agreed. And if they release him now, he's not going to get more than the veteran minimum on another team based on his performance in coverage the last couple of years.
