Moran Norris, Irony, and NinerTalk

We picked up Moran within hours of his being cut by the Texans. He comes here, is a superhuman blocking machine(plus caught a couple passes, one for TD), Frank has a lites out yr with Moran leading him thru the hole, and what happens? He gets cut.

Frank then has an okay yr, but definitely not a 1700 yarder, and it is apparent that keasey nor mrob can match the blocking skills of Moran. 2009, scot realizes his mistake, and hires moran again.

This is a GM at his worst, not his best. It must have been embarrassing for scot to tell moran, "we need you". GMs are supposed to see the big picture. Ours sees the trees, but not the forest. I am delighted scot had a change of heart. Problem is, moran never should have been cut to start with, and this only illuminates our problem: our GM is green, maybe this is as good as he gets, and he is not the one who should be steering this ship. I don't know this, but would bet HE put the kibash on Pioli, because HE thot he could build this team. Just an opinion, but i don't think scot has the talent to be a GM. Had he been really smart, Pioli would be here right now---but that would have meant scot had a less important role on this team, and thus nixed the pioli hiring...and scot wanted to be numero uno.

In any event, i was saddened when moran left, and am delighted to have him back(as is frank). It would have been nice if our GM recognized moran's value initially, but sadly he didn't. This has nothing to do with moran, but everything to do with our substandard GM.

I for one was enraged when they cut Norris in favor of Keasey. While he did not have the kind of year we would have liked in 2007 (and who did with the Hostler Express) I knew that Norris is the kind of lunch pail guy who does the thankless work and inspires the rest of the RB squad.

That coupled with my belief that if Keasey makes your team, your team is not very good. I was mad then, and I am happy now that Norris is back.

Thanks, Nick, for correcting my brain fade. A question i wondered about since Moran was re-signed, was, will the magic return and will the frank/moran combo be as good as before? Yes, it was behind the best yr LA/JJ had, but i still think if we have an OG/OT tandem that can move defenders, even a little, Moran can lead frank thru for 4 plus yds/ pop. Maybe that's wishful thinking, but when Moran left here he had not lost anything in blocking ability. Basically, our GM/owner/HC screwed up, and have now rectified that mistake. Will Staley/Baas or Staley/chilo be able to open that hole? Or will Chilo at RT with Baas or Snyder at RG be able to do it? i think all of us are hoping for an OT starter acquisition, FA or draft, but if that doesn't happen, can the above OG/OT pairs get the job done?

Reacquiring Moran was a good move...okay , an excellent move. I still think he and FRank will cause some real damage as a team. But now can our OL , right or left, do their part? It will be interesting to see, but i would feel a helluva lot better had scot gotten one of the 3 bonafide OT starters available initially in FA. Unfortunately, i think he is mistakenly trying to get an OT on the cheap, and that plan has once again backfired in his face.

The truly bizarre thing about all this is that scot was willing to consider Warner for a boatload of $(10-12mil/yr for 2yrs), yet wouldn't consider one of three starting OTs in FA for half that money...or less. That to me is our problem, and the misfire on letting moran go is just symbolic of that: scot had no long range plan, and is not able to see the forest...he just sees the trees.

I've pretty much liked Norris. Have hated knowing that Keazey was our starting FB.

Just knew that when Martz came in , the FB was gonna be history.

I am looking forward to seeing the reuniting of Norris and Gore.

Kevin Smith and Rudi Johnson rushed for over 1,200 yards combined. We'll see how Gore does. I'd venture to say that he's not getting 1,700 as some seem to equate the Norris signing with. Our defense was decent towards the end of the year against non-playoff teams.

I agree with the originator of this discussion. I find it very distasteful when fans kick players as they're going out the door. This is a brutal game and the players mostly leave it all on the field - I've always appreciated the dedication, discipline and talent of NFL players and I've always been grateful for the work they've done on the Niners even if they were not ultimately impact players. Moran Norris actually WAS an impact player. He's an absolutely punishing run blocker. I'm glad he's back and more importantly, Frank Gore's glad he's back.

Our defense played well against the Jets who had Favre (has a history of owning us) and Thomas Jones (who led the AFC in rushing). Played well against the Dolphins and the Redskins. Our defense did very well the second half of the season.
