My aunt, who is in her 70s now got married to a 20 year old when she was 14. This practice is still commonplace in much of the world. In jewish culture aren't you considered a man at what 13? Hispanic girls at what 15? They have ceremonies for it. Many Egyption rulers were teenagers when they took power so that 1000 years ago is BS.
The environment absolutely influences everything, especially this issue. A fully developed girl living in a city like NYC growing up in today's environment is not a child in this day and age. Now a 17 year old girl with no internet and no TV living in Montana, then you may have an argument.

but it is still just mimicry. Look we had some big trees cut down recently and that is hard work. One of the guys brought along his son who is 8 years old and he helps work. And this kid was doing some real hard work, he did more work in that day than our kids have done their whole lives. And while we were impressed with him, even talked to him a bit...he was still very clearly a child and not different at all from my 8 year old Boy...its just there environments are clearly different.

You basing this on girls you know. You think these Hamptons partying rich chicks who have behaved like adults since their early teens are the same? Or some teenage pop star who has been basically working like and schmoozing with adults at an earlier age is more mentally prepared for this type of thing than a 20 year old bumpkin from Iowa? Environment has everything to do, it's not mimicry, it's who they are. I'm not saying this chick is all of those things, but you can't speak in absolutes like all 17 year olds are the same. As far as Sanchez taking advantage of a little girl, come on. Joe Shmoe maybe, but this dude is a former USC and current NYC pro QB, he doesn't have to. Yes agree to disagree on this one. BTW, while I certainly don't base my opinion on my circle of friends, these Women who I grew up with are from Rich areas and we were all sexually active as kids and partied like we were adults from starting in the pre teen years. In fact of my friends I am talking about is who I lost my virginity to, she was my first and I was her second, her first being a College guy over the Summer.

So that is precisely what I am saying, is that ultimately we were never any more mature than the kids growing up in Iowa

On Friday, the folks at Deadspin hinted at a coming story of a relationship between Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and a 17-year-old girl. The initial blurb, which didn’t and still doesn’t point out that a 24-year-old man who has consensual sex with a 17-year-old girl breaks no law, caused many to assume incorrectly that Sanchez could soon be in jail, especially since the headline proclaimed that “Mark Sanchez’s 17-year-old lady friend has found a lawyer.”

The truth is that Sanchez violated no laws or NFL policies, if the allegation is true. And the official story of Sanchez and a 17-year-old girl, which really doesn’t do anything other than provide enough detail to prove fairly convincingly that the relationship occurred, explains early in the narrative that Sanchez broke no laws.

So why, you ask, is it a story? Well, if the age of consent in New York were 18, it would have been a Lawrence Taylor/Mary Kay LeTourneau-type case, with Sanchez facing jail time due to a legal system that provides an artificial barrier to the ability of one human being to consent to sexual relations with a sufficiently older person. Even without the specter of criminal misconduct, it’s a story because it involves the highest-profile player on the highest-profile team in the NFL.

As we’ve said time and again, with the Jets’ unabashed desire for attention comes the reality of scrutiny, and a decision by Sanchez to date a 17-year-old necessarily will make headlines and raise eyebrows, regardless of whether it’s “right” or “wrong”.

The Jets said on Saturday that the team won’t be discussing Sanchez’s private life.

Jason Whitlock of FOXSports.com had a great take on the situation during Wednesday’s PFT Live. Newsworthiness is judged by the expected level of interest, and people will be interested in this story, even if their interest initially was heightened by the unspoken impression that Sanchez would be spending time wearing orange instead of green. The fact that reasonable people could be reasonably interested in the story was all the more reason for Sanchez to steer clear of any 17-year-old girls.

Indeed, the relationship began on New Year’s Eve, after an avalanche of negative press and other embarrassments for the franchise, including in the month of December alone the tripping incident involving former strength coach Sal Alosi and the bizarre photos and videos featuring the head coach’s wife. Sanchez, who seems like a level-headed guy, should have been able to recognize the problems that could arise from word getting out of a relationship with a 17-year-old girl. It hurts his image and marketability, and it could have created a postseason distraction for the team.

In the end, there’s really not much of a story. The full Deadspin article grasps for a narrative that would send a message deeper and more profound than “Mark Sanchez had sex with a 17-year-old girl.” In the end, that’s the only reason why folks will click the link — especially since plenty of people will instantly assume that the man who has witnessed more than a few receivers visit Revis Island could be destined for a trip to Rikers Island.

one of the things I have noticed about this debate is that guys get pretty defensive pretty quickly.

Nobody can determine if anyone else is creepy as long as all laws are being followed. So if you don't think that is even a little bit creepy than more power to you.

You can read all my posts and my opinion on the matter, but after saying all that I will admit that I did bang 18 thru 20 year old women in my mid to late 20's. Even while I was doing it I considered it a little bit creepy

And there is no way anybody is going to be able to express opinion that fits all scenarios. A 28 with a 19 in a 5 year relationship does not register creepy to me at all, but that is difficult to reconcile along with all the other things I have posted

At least with a 19 year old you're talking about someone whose probally going to college or working as a stripper.

If Sanchez videotaped what he did and posted it online he'd have underage porn on his hand.
