Ross Dwelley

Is that you Ross?

Ross Dwelley is from the University of San Diego Torreros. Or USD for short. Not to be confused with San Diego State University Aztecs which is the bigger school and more premier program in San Diego. USD is a smaller private Catholic University but you could not be Catholic and go there. Some athletes in particular do go there whether or not they have that religious affiliation.

Dwelley is pretty tall and big and runs real good routes and always seems to find open spots in the zone defense. He has real good hands and will catch just about anything. He can adjust to high, low, behind him or whatever. He mostly seems to come down with the ball. He will also compete for the ball in a crowd. I have watched him for several years. He was a pretty good player at least at his division level. He was also a pretty good blocker at least at his level.

But with Dwelley he doesn't have huge bulk for the NFL level. He does have the large frame to put on more size and weight. He doesn't have great timed speed is what the reports say. I'm not sure about his pro potential. But he was a pretty good college player at his level. Dwelley did catch a lot of TD's. He was a redzone target for them. They would go to him a lot in the endzone and he would deliver too.

I think he is a possible late round guy or undrafted FA with the chance to possibly make a roster. But I don't think he is an early or mid round guy at this point.

I checked him put last night. I didnt see Gronk. Ironically, i seen George Kittle.


Wouldnt mind adding as an UDFA but give more Jordan Akins in the 6thish round

Nobody is Gronk. LOL. He is a super star.

Dwelley runs real good routes, has excellent hands and has the size and frame. He doesn't have real good timed speed. But he plays faster than he times. He was a good player at his level. There is a chance he can make a roster. But he would be going later in the draft IMO. He's not an early round guy. That doesn't mean he can't find a role somewhere. I think it's possible he can. He just doesn't have super star potential at the next level.

All he needs is oppurtunity. If he goes to a team that throws 120+ balls to the TE/FB to give yourself a chance to stick. (If he goes undrafted).

Thats any pass catcher. So many talented players being wasted by lack of oppurtunity or poor scheme fit then ran out of the league.


Eric johnson wasn't super talented. He was on a bad team and had PLENTY of oppurtunities. You may or may not recall that being my mine argument versus vernon davis at #6

He is a really, really good pass catcher and really, really good route runner. He has size, height and frame. He just doesn't have a lot of explosive straight line speed. But he seems to always find the openings in the zone and is always open despite not much speed. I think he can find a role. He is really good catching the ball and will catch almost anything. It doesn't have to be a perfect throw with Dwelley.

That's a pretty accurate descriptions and it's pretty much the same things I have been saying earlier in the thread. I've seen this guy play many times. That's who he is. Tall and a big frame and big target. With exceptional hands. He catches absolutely everything. He is not a great athlete though or super straight line speed timed fast. But it's possible as a situational redzone target he could be effective. If you are at the 10, 5, 3, 2 yard line on first and goal how straight line fast do you need to be? There is not much area of real estate to cover. That's where I think he could be very effective. Because he is excellent at finding the open spots in the zone and has phenomenal hands. He could make plays in short areas like deep in the redzone. Where finding open spots in the zone, a large height and frame and great hands are more important than straight line timed speed.

He can also put on weight and be a blocking TE. I don't think it will change his speed much. He was already not real fast. He has the height and frame to add more muscle and weight. If he can block and be a short area redzone target and a first down move the chains target I think he can find a role. Dwelley was a good blocker at least at his division level in college. He might be a little underrated and might surprise. But his speed and athleticism is not in the great range for the NFL level. So keep that in mind.

I could see him in the very late rounds or as an undrafted FA. He might surprise. He has a unique skill set. He's very tall with absolutely great hands. I have rarely ever seen him drop a ball. You don't have to throw perfect to Dwelley. He will catch it no matter how you throw it. That's the type of player he is.

Exactly, but not just in the red zone, he also could be a great short yardage possession receiver where it's 3rd and 5 for a 1st down if he could be a dual threat to catch a short pass or to run block ....
