DB Pre Combine Mock

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't see Lawson (or Dodd) as 3-4 OLB. They're too slow. I don't see explosive players. They're well coached and set the edge better than most college players. In the 3-4 they'd help against the run, but I'd leave them in the 4-3.
I think this draft has 2 elite edge rushers. Lawson and Spence. I can't disagree with you. Can't see us taking Spence with the red flags. My priority is 3rd downs getting our defense off the field. I'd expect him to be brought along like Aldon. Set him loose on 3rd downs year 1 and develop him at OLB by year 2. Dodd is 100% a 4-3 DE. I've watched enough of Lawson to believe he can make the transition. He's the best player on defense every game he's played in. A 10 sack guy year 1. I'll take that
Spence is the the best 3-4 OLB...Lawson wouldn't be a bad 2nd choice just don't see him as a top 10 pick maybe in a trade down.

HATE the RG3 crap...NO thank you. Ragland isn't gonna make it past GB and we need a cover ILB more than a two down thumper IMO.

Like your FA pickups outside of RG3 want nothing to do with him.
I agree with strickac that Lawson is not a 3-4 OLB. Besides Spence, the other quality edge players to help the Niners could be Kamalei Correia from Boise St., Yannick Ngakoue from Maryland, Victor Ochi from Stonybrook, plus a couple of other sleepers in Tyrone Holmes from Montana or Matt Judon from Grand Valley State.

RGIII is too fragile mentally and physically to sign as a free agent IMO, but the rest of your free agents are very good.

Would like to see how you finish the draft before I make any final judgements on that.
DB...adding pass rushers without upgrading the DL isn't wise. Remember when Harbaugh had Ray Mac and Justin Smith bookending either Williams or Dorsey...our front 3 was very stout and it was the trigger for the pass rush. Look at last season...our pass rush was awful...why? Look at last year's front 3. Other than Williams, nobody distinguished themselves, thus we got run over in the run game and had a paltry pass rush. If Baalke doesn't sign at least one or hopefully two DL FA's, it makes little sense to draft pass rushers. Read Matt Barrows' blog on this subject...it'll tell you all you need to know about the importance of a strong and deep DL. I also wouldn't cut Bethea...they might restructure his contract some, but he's the leader of the secondary. They need him.

I forgot to mention resigning Williams. Dial, Armstead, Dorsey, Henry, Carradine, Purcel, Ramsey is our rotation

Great points. If the Niners added a Buckner or Vernon Butler, waived TJE, and re-signed Williams, I would feel much better about our defense going forward. I also agree with you about Bethea. One more year of veteran leadership would really help Tarrt, Reid and Jimmy Ward moving forward.

Tank is gonna be a OLB and has already cut weight to do so...Ramsey has yet to play a football for us. DL NEEDS to be taken care of an adding one guy in the 5th round isn't gonna cut it IMO.

I'd rather keep Kap than sign RG3.
Ochi will be long gone before the 6th round
I'd love if they used much of our available cap space. I don't see any top DL coming to SF but I hope I'm wrong. I could see us signing a 2nd tier guy but I can't really speculate who. I know we need to draft starters in rounds 1-3 this year. We have more then 3 needs. A position will be left out unless we sign 6-8 FA's. Every mock has holes. Everyone.

I do appriciate the feedback.
I can see Baalke doing something like this. In the Deepest class of D-Lineman he waits until the later rounds so he can get a project player.

Our 1st last year is a project
No way to RG3. Guy is a headache, not to mention his dad.
If you want the best pure pass rusher go Spense at 7. 7 is too early for Lawson.
Also why is everyone drafting a Kicker? If we don't keep Dawson which I think we will but if we don't Acosta is already on our roster now. Kid was great last year.
