So we have Smith, possibly Boldin for 1 year and Smelter and you guys don't see a need for a WR? I 100% see a need for a long term answer at WR especially if we do the smart thing and hire a passing guru as HC and start winging the ball around a lot more in this league that favors passing and uses it's refs to enforce that.

Why would Patton be gone?

I think Torrey, Patton, Ellington, Smelter and maybe a FA WR would be passable with a better offensive system, at least it isnt as pressing of a need as OL, OLB or QB IMO.
Patton is horrible. 1 yard on 6 targets last game, and got manhandled for an Int. He better be gone. Ellington has shown nothing, and Smelter is an unknown quantity. The club`s record with "injury redshirts`" is beyond awful. They have pretty much zilch to show for it, other than some half assed snaps from Tank Carradine, who was a high second round pick.

I like Pharoh Cooper who far outperformed Ellington at USC. He's a bit taller and a far better receiver with more upside.
Other guy I like, more of an H back is Bucky Hodges. Virginia Tech. Similar to Blake Bell (converted QB), but faster and more athletic as a receiver. My sleeper pick out of this draft.

Tyler Boyd is starting to look really good to me. He could be available in the mid-second go early 3rd round.

Ellington has shown nothing? Come on. I've seen enough from both Patton and Ellington to know that with a play caller/offensive philosophy that was more imaginative, both could do some serious damage and open up things for the rest of the offense. I'd like to see more attempts to get the ball in their hands on easy passes, on first down, that could pick up a quick 5 to 8 yards.
Patton was targeted 6 times last game, I think he dropped 5 of them. Out muscled for an interception as well. Ellington is basically on notice for his job. Patton is gone this off season for sure, and Ellington's future is sketchy at best. I think they kept Patton this long because he was Kap's buddy, and they already dumped Lockette.

Was he really outmuscled for the int? Outmuscled implies that he made a real attempt at making the catch. I saw no effort from him. Shoot, we probably didn't get the PI call because he never even tried to get to the ball. If he tries, he probably breaks up the int, and he should force the refs to make the call against Badger.
Ellington has performed admirably nearly everytime he has gotten the ball on offense. He is not on notice for his job, but the CYA special teams coach that threw him under the bus for the media might not be around if he keeps that crap up. JT was clearly more displeased with the ST coach than he was with Bruce, at least in the presser.
The WR corps definitely going to get a shakeup. Torrey Smith is really the only one guaranteed a job next year. The other three or four spots could all be filled by newcomers.

I agree. This team needs some help at the WR spot. It's not often discussed but we are not giving our QBs much to work with. Love Boldin but he's at the end of his career.

Torrey Smith is a lock to stay.

Boldin is likely gone since we are in rebuild mode.

Patton is probably coming back One more year on his contract.

DeAndre Smelter will be back.

Ellington will probably be in camp competition.

I figure we might have one 2nd-4th round WR added and probably a FA wr

Brain Quick is the only FA WR with size I see after a quick skim, and he was a dud for the Rams

It sounds like with the lack of FA WR's that might make people reach for receivers in the draft. Do you think we'd be reaching if we got Treadwell with our first pick most likely in the Top 10?

Nope, he is the real deal. Was top of the class as a recruit and has totally lived up to the billing when healthy. WR is a dicey position to draft, but Quon doesn't seem to have any single flaw that could stop his development.
It would have been nice to see DeAndre Smelter play before the draft to judge how critical the position is come May. He seems to have the tools and the coaching staff likes what they've seen in practice.

He might be BPA especially if we win a couple more and pick closer to 10th. If we're picking more like 5th then no.
