It marks the 10 year anniversary of the 2005 Draft. And on this exact day a decade ago, the 49ers selected Alex Smith 1st overall and selected Frank Gore in the 3rd round. As I sit back in my pseudo-GM lazyboy recliner sipping on a beer, I realize how much our franchise changed that day. That inevitable day. To some it was exciting and glorious. To others it was heartbreaking. Heartbreaking to stomach seeing our local boy with the golden arm from Cal free fall all the way down to pick #24. I know hindsight is 20-20 but there is always that "what if?" And onto Frank Gore. We literally struck GOLD that day when the 49ers selected him 65th overall. How did you feel on that day 10 years ago? I can tell you right now that I felt kinda meh with Alex Smith being selected. As much highlights I tried watching on him, I never felt that shock and awe. I sit here and wonder... Will we strike gold again this Draft??? I certainly hope so...

Being completely honest, I was lukewarm on both the qbs. I thought and was led to believe Braylon Edwards was the best player in the draft. He is who I wanted, we had so many holes I just wanted the best player in the draft. Edwards showed flashes in CLE, but he was bad with us.

However, it will always be the draft in which we got first round talent in third round in gore. It still pisses me off he will not get a ring with us.

It was also on this day that 3 of the top 5 draft picks were RB's. How times have changed in the NFL.

It is ironic that Mike McArthy was a niners coach in 2005 and obviously had input on the qb draft pick.

Of course he would be. It would have taken him a different route and his timeline may be different but his talent is undeniable. Eventually in the nfl the cream always rises to the top no matter the system/situation.

On another note Mariota reminds me a little of Alex Smith and Rodgers. It will be interesting to see which way his career goes.

All the talk about missing out on Rodgers is a joke. With no OC and one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL how long would it have been before injuries sidelined him.

So what Willis career is over n VD is a big softy now yrs later we still dont have a Lombardi to show for it at least we would of had a elite QB with a better chance of finally getting the 6th.

Exactly. It took 3 years of Rodgers sitting behind Favre and completely changing his throwing motion for him to be successful. If we had him, doubt we fix his throwing motion since he would have been thrown into the fire to soon. Which would have made him resort back to his natural improper throwing motion.
