Draft Strategy that is Overlooked

Browse 49ers books and videos
Our best drafts have happened when we had 2 picks in the first. Staley and Willis, Iupati and Davis. But we also tend to find the best value in rounds 2-4. I think we have too many holes to use this strategy this draft. 2012 would have been the year to try this.

Doing this allows us to completely control the draft next year and restock. We got a lot of depth guys stepping up this year. I'd much rather see what we got talent wise this year and then make another run over the next three years starting next year. With two ones next year, plus the comp picks we could stack the team again. What you guys think? It would be similar to what we did when we draft Iupati and Davis in round 1 a few years back.

Or why not move up for a difference maker this year? Like you said we have a lot of young talent that haven't really had a chance to take on bigger roles. I Think a player like Cooper/White/Williams/Shelton etc could be a real difference maker for SF. I'm in the move up bandwagon....

Is the draft class supposed to be stronger next year?

It is hard to find a team willing to part with a 1st round pick in a future draft.
What's the talent pool like next year. We could also trade back to the late first or even early second for a first next year and a 3rd or something. I remember when we traded a early 2nd for a first the following year and a 3rd same year. I think Scotty pulled off that one.
Many sports gurus I know that follow college much more than I do would agree that this years talent pools falls off right around that 15 spot. Turning that pick into a later pick in rounds 2-4 this year with a sec 1 next year is the way to go. I'm not sure on the talent for next year but let's be honest there is always talent. With a sec 1st for next year the niners could hold multiple picks in every round! What's the current count on comp picks based on player value? It's like three picks correct through rounds 2-4 plus the typical compensation added in rounds 6-7. Just imagine nearly 2 picks in every round. We could play the board, grab our guys, fill our holes, and recreate the depth we used to have to make the last super bowl run. It's the only choice imo! With the needs we have we can find talent later in the draft. CB, DL,OL, etc... The only thing I'd be willing to waste that 15 on would be a mlb replacement for Willis and Borland. Anyone know the round and pick we drafted Borland at?

I just think we can grab additional talent in this draft later and still evaluate the future this year. This would give us the clearest picture for next years draft with extra picks. With the way we just got gutted we need extra picks.
Baalke won't move up. He won't trade away draft picks with the way the roster is right now.

If anything, he trades back.

I agree we have holes but we also already have the same number of players at each position we did last year. To recreate the depth we used to have we need multiple picks one pick isn't going to do anything. If our pick was higher up in the top 10 I'd say keep it and use it to fill a hole. With the talent pool in this draft teams would kill for an early pick to get their guy because there just isn't that much standout talent.

IMO, unless a real gem falls into our laps I think Trent does the Ali Shuffle and moves back scoring some good hits.

That's exactly what I am proposing, trade back in this draft into round 2-3 and receive a teams 1 for next year. I'd even take a 3 or 4 plus next years one from a team so we essentially can take the top playmaker at two positions next year.
Please stop with the WR suggestions. After Crabtree that better never happen. If we use the pick it has to be mlb. I really hope we trade back and get an extra 1 for next year.

This team needs some starters and some depth right now, not next year. No injury specials anymore either. The Niners have 5 of those guys from last year's draft in addition to what they get this year. Don't think Baalke is worried about picks for next year. This team will have a bunch of comp picks with all the free agent defections.
This only works if the GM has long-term job security. After all the controversy this off-season--especially the dismissal of Harbaugh-- the pressure is on the front office to win now. With question marks at ILB, CB, WR, etc, Trent needs to find talent to step in from day one and contribute. It will be interesting to see how he balances planning/ drafting for the future vs. drafting for this season, with the intention of assuaging pressure and criticism from the fan-base and potentially ownership. He could place all his chips on a lot of the existing roster depth to step up, but I'd imagine he'd hedge his bets by keeping all, if not moving up for picks this year.

Extra picks in rounds 2-7 essentially mean nothing unless u have an extra 1 to make a move. With an extra one, you bundle it with a second pick and make a move to get your top draft need. Then the other one is used to fill the second most needed roster spot. Drafting a guy at 15 does nothing for us this year. The same talent can be had later in rounds 2-7.
