Starting Corners

Watch our starting corners be like Reaser and Acker. I be like lol

They guys who mostly started last year were a 3rd rounder coming off an ACL (Culliver) a veteran street free agent (Cox) and a 4th round rookie at nickel (Johnson). Most people would've lol'd at that, but it worked.

Point being, I wouldn't feel uncomfortable starting Brock, Johnson and Ward/Wright at the nickel. We had cap space to sign either Cully or Cox, but decided not to...a big reason why (IMO) is their comfort-level with Johnson as a starter and the projected growth of Ward. They also seem to like Acker and Reaser, both of whom should get playing time this year. In fact, if Brock can't stay healthy or doesn't play well, I can see one of those guys taking his spot.

Throw in the veterans Wright and Cook (neither are great, but they're also not as bad as many people believe) and we're in good shape in terms of young talent. And as posted previously, if there's one position I trust Baalke to consistently nail, it's CB. So I don't see us taking a CB until at least the 3rd round, and if we do, I don't think it's with the idea of replacing Johnson.

Totally get that, but I admit I wasn't crazy about the Cox signing a few years ago or the Cook signing last year, but they worked out fairly well. So we'll see.

Waynes may be the only one to beat out Johnson bc nobody is beating Brock.

Aside from that your answer is probably nobody in the draft unless drafted high could beat out Johnson, at least not right away.

If they sign Sterling Moore, I think he could be a starter on the outside along with Brock. Jimmie Ward in the slot and now you've got Johnson, Wright, Acker, Reaser and Cook all holding down the backup spots.

Guy that may slip due to combine and possibly be drafted in the third is Quinton Rollins. I can see him giving Johnson a run for his money easily.

If Brock is healthy, the team is really only one starter away from having a very solid secondary.

I know this is a bit off draft topic, but I wonder if the Niners could trade for Gilbert from the Browns? Is he salvageable?

He sounds like a head case, we've had enough of those lol. They would probably want more than we'd be willing to give up anyway.

I wonder what his rookie contract looks like? Judging from last year I doubt he's worth what top 10 rookies get paid.
