Eagles not going to trade up to #15 (why should they ?). Niners are not taking Dorsett in the 2nd after signing Torey Smith and lastly Niners will be taking a DL in the 2nd and it won't be Preston Smith, it will be Cowboy II - Henry Anderson.

I hope this draft is not the case. Midget WR's are one trick pony's. especially in our heavy run block O, we can't be snagging pocket QB's either. It's kind of a waste, especially when our O is built around a highly gifted QB with Usain Bolt feet

Kelly insists he's not trading up to get Mariota...could be smokescreen, who knows. At any rate, I don't see them giving up a #2 to get him. Could happen, but they've got a lot of defensive needs. If it were to happen I'd rather have a stud DL than Peters...I like Marcus, but there are enough red flags to give GM's reason to hesitate.

I get Preston Smith's versatility, but at 270 lbs isn't big enough to play DE in the 3-4. Arguably his best value as at OLB...which is fine. Only way I'd take him is if Baalke already has one of the "bigs" in his pocket.

I don't like Dorsett in the 2nd rd...if Baalke's going to take a WR, I'd say it'd be a bigger guy. An ILB would make more sense to me.

I like the Eric Rowe pick. Ditto the Mizzou OL.

Not sure the kid from ND State is what Baalke's looking for in an ILB. After reading NFL.com draft profiles, not sure he's an ILB, seems more of an edge guy.

preston is the same size as justin smith was coming out of college. but in the end, game film determines suitability to play 5-tech, and preston--like justin--displays power beyond his 270 lbs. you have to be powerful enough to not be stifled by contact with o-linemen, while knowing that your path to the pocket is through them not by them. preston has long, strong arms and strong hands, and he shows justin-like power and leverage when engaging opponents.
as far as positional versatility goes, 3-4 olb is his least suitable position, even though his height and weight numbers may indicate otherwise. he's more of powerful/torquey athlete, not a speed/agility athlete. the film shows he plays like a 5-tech; that's where he belongs.

Your opinion of Smith differs from NFL.com draft profiles, which are a synopsis of NFL scouts, GM's and personnel chiefs analyses. Comparing his size with Justin Smith's coming out of college doesn't really mean anything...because in the end it's the production that matters. Justin played in a 4-3 defense with the Bengals...which is a heckuva lot different than the 3-4 in terms of responsibility. He was bigger when he became a Niner...and will be a HOFer when he's eligible.

In NFL.com draft profiles Preston Smith is the 12th rated DL...his NFL player comparison is Antonio Smith, a competent, but hardly outstanding DE. Their BL is: "Smith has been a solid, rotational defensive end for Mississippi State, but nothing too special. When studying tape long enough, you see traits and potential. With his long arms, plus hands and ability to play the run, Smith could be an interesting prospect inside or in a hybrid 3-4 front. As a 4-3 defensive end, he lacks the twitch to be an impact player."

So, maybe if Smith adds 10-15 lbs of muscle he could become a decent NFL 5-technique DE...but, that's going to take some time. Baalke was willing to draft Carradine a year before he figured he'd play...but that was with Ray Mac and Justin Smith playing DE at a very high level. That situation has totally changed now, so I'd think he'd draft a bigger, stronger DL that's closer to being ready to play sooner rather than later. Also, from what I've read, Mangini likes big DL...so it'd seem unlikely they draft Smith in lieu of one of the "bigs". In addition to, maybe, but not as anything resembling a replacement for the great Justin Smith.
