If you could travel back in time would you draft Aldon Smith or J.J. Watt, and why?

Quite a lot of exaggerated response going on here. I suggest we wait until the end of the season and then assess.
On a personal note, if I could travel back in time I will take with me the knowledge of several winning lotto numbers.

On football, I would pick Watt, and tell Baalke to reconsider his entire draft class with AJ Jenkins, LaMichael James, etc.

I would take Aldon Smith for the simple reason is we wont have to pay him 51 million guaranteed . We will get Aldon for a lot less and he will still be a guy who can get you 12+ sacks a year.

In the seven games where Watt has been his most disruptive (five or more combined sacks, batted passes and stuffs), the Texans are just 3-4, according to Stats LLC.

Meanwhile, Texans are 15-17 when Watt collects two or less sacks, batted passes and stuffs. When he finishes with three or more, they're 12-10. When Watt has been completely shut down by the opposing team and limited to less than one sack, batted pass and run stuff, the Texans are only 7-8. This isn't the type of impact you'd expect from the game's top defensive player and perennial MVP candidate.

With No. 1 pick Jadeveon Clowney injured, Watt has drawn extra attention from blockers, yet has managed to remain disruptive against opposing offenses. But despite Watt's best efforts, the Texans are only 3-3.

I would love to have JJ, but everything at the time of the draft indicated he was strictly a 4-3 DE (I think he has shown since the Draft that he can play in muliple schemes in multiple alignments), so it would have meant weakening our strongest position (LB - going from 4 Outstanding ones to 3)

...but the thought of JJ and Cowboy on the outside and Dorsey in the middle?

Before the draft most everyone was saying his best fit was 3-4 DE.
I voted Aldon Smith because Aldon is the Better pure pass rusher. Sure Watt is a Studd Beast but he also needs playmakers around him. aldon has 42 sacks in 43 games!! That is the sickest ratio in NFL History. Aldon was Baalkes best move besides the gem of Navorro Bowman.

If Watt played OLB, I would pick Watt, but since he plays DE which isn't a high need for us, I find it difficult to make a choice. I would pick Aldon except for the fact that he can't stay on the field, and potentially may not be a 49er 3 years from now. So I am torn, and couldn't even make the vote on the poll. (:
The best response I saw was to trade the entire 2012 draft to acquire another first in 2011 and get JJ Watt. I'm not entirely sure that would be enough (he was drafted 11th overall), but if it were, that would be it. There are only two types of players worth doing that type of thing for: Quarterbacks and guys that get the quarterback. May as well since we're going to play this game of looking back.

With that said, does anyone think it were be worth it if a 3-4 DE came along with that type of ability? For example, if JaDaveon Clowney had a Jerry Rice-like work ethic, would you trade an entire draft to get him?
What a bunch of delusional homers. OMG.

Watt is the BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER in the NFL BY FAR! Plus he is 0% of the trouble. Mr. All American off the field doing his charity work and helping kids. Aldon is getting arrested, shooting guns in the air, crashing into trees, spending all his time in rehab, missing huge parts of seasons with suspensions. The guy has not played large parts of 2 years! That's BAD. REALLY BAD. You want players who can PLAY and are reliable and show up to work everyday. And the team is so important to them that they won't mess up off the field so they can be there for their teamates on the field. That certainly is not Aldon.

This question should be 100% to 0% or at least 99% to 1%. It would be on any other board. Only on a Niner board could Aldon pull these #'s. The fact that he is LOSING even on a Niner board 70% something to 20% something give or take as the #'s continue to come in and change tells you A LOT. Even on NINER board MOST people know and admit the truth although it is hard. You could make the argument Watt should have been the #1 pick. He would go much higher than #11 if you had to do that draft over. 11 is already high but far to low for his talent.

There's an x factor in play. Von Miller was also available in this draft. So if you could only get 2 of the 3 -- who'd it be?

Still Aldon + JJ.

Von Miller is in Stage 3 of the leagues drug policy. One more violation and he is banished from the NFL for a minimum period of one calendar year.

Von Miller -> 47 games - 44 sacks

Aldon Smith -> 43 games - 42 sacks

---------------

JJ Watt -> 55 games - 41.5 sacks

Watt plays a different position and does more things. He is not only a sack guy. He's better than Von Miller and Aldon Smith.
