Besides Spillman, I'm not comfortable with our back up Safety position. Reed is real good and Bethea is solid with plenty of experience. However, Reid had issues with concussions last year and Bethea is old with his share of injuries.

I wouldn't feel good at all if we had to rely on our current back ups if they had to become starters due to injuries... Spillman>>>Dahl, but still I think we should get a safety with one of our first three picks (one that has potential of starting on day one like Reid).

There are probably 2 S in this draft with day one starting ability and they will be gone before the 49ers pick in round 1. I really like Clinton-Dix, but Bethea's signing makes a big trade up to get him unlikely.

I think S is on the board, but probably in the 3rd looking to get him ready to start in a year or 2.

WHY do people keep saying this??? Bethea is 29 years old and hasn't missed a game in like 6 years. Stop confusing him with Bob Sanders.

Bob Sanders is 5'8 if he's lucky with a neck as big as Takeo Spikes... I liked him a lot, btw, but too injury prone.

Bethea may have never missed any time in recent years, but like most players that play through injuries, he's still had his nicks/bruises. Okay, 8/9 yrs in the league and 29 isn't really old (30 yrs old by game day), but he's not young anymore.

After Reid / Bethea, who do we really have? You may be able to make a case for Spillman or Dahl , I hope no one gets injured, but we hope for that every year and it still happens...

Some early scouting talks had Dix in mid to later in the first round. Maybe we might have a chance for one of the two if the FO is really interested in a safety that early by making some moves.
I don't think we signed Bethea at over 7 million a year so we could trade up for a day 1 starter at safety. It's not good practice to pay backups that much money when you're tight on money and trying to extend key players (especially given Kaepernick wants 18+ a year). I think we may get a developmental safety prospect in the 3rd or 4th round who is only expected to provide depth for now but eventually take over for Bethea.

You said he had his share of injuries, yet there's absolutely no evidence of that. He's started over 80 consecutive games, not seeing the injuries at all.

4 years, 21 million with like 6 million guaranteed.

http://www.kffl.com/player/13861/nfl/injury_history/antoine-bethea (select a year)

I live out here in Vegas, don't have a gambling problem, but love to place a wager here and there during football season. A lot of times, I take a peek at starting line ups (who is Out/Doubtful/Questionable/Probable on game days). I've seen his name several times on the lists, but he still played. He hasn't had any significant injuries (if that's what you think I'm implying)...

Plenty of players pop up on injury lists, Belichick puts half his roster on the injury list, the reality is that every NFL player gets wear and tear but there's absolutely nothing to suggest that Bethea is on the verge of injury or that he's going to fall off the cliff pretty soon. He was signed as a temporary stopgap for 2 years, no reason why he can't be a quality contributor to this defense for 2 years.

Your original comment was that Bethea is "old with his share of injuries." Neither rings true.

LOL...are you sure?

I can see him in the 2nd. Our 2nd is almost an early 3rd anyway
His current ranking puts him in the 5th-6th round range and that is post combine.

Sometimes you just have to chance that another team won't reach for him. If you wanted to target him late 4th or trade back to early 5th that would be 1 thing. Is it possible he goes sooner> Sure. Anything is possible. It's possible Watkins goes late in the 1st or early 2nd and won't be available where you slotted him, not likely but possible. Should we draft him in the 1st round to be safe? Don't think so.

Well, a hammy, toe problem, ankle, etc... may be minor, but still an injury (he played through). And don't get me wrong, I really like the signing. He proved to be legit since he started (especially since Sanders was always getting injured). He's very well capable of getting by w/out a significant injury and should last his contract with us. BTW, he may not be old, but he will be 30 before the season starts (still not that old), just saying

Although, no one is exempt from an injury and my main concern is that it could spell trouble if Bethea and/or Reid miss some time (hope it never happens), therefore, I'm hoping we can be fortunate (once again) and find another safety in the draft because (Spillman>>>Dahl), they're alright, but

Belichicks' list can be ridiculous at times (listing hang nails as injuries and what not), I think he does that just to mess with opposing teams heads (granted a lot of them are serious ones).

About that gambling problem, YES I'm sure ... when I first moved up here in the mid nineties, I lost my shirt / my azz (literally)! Moved back to Cali/the Bay with a full tank of gas and 40$ in quarters (good thing I drove a 4 banger at the time). 1 1/2 yrs later I came back and never had that problem (ever) again. You name it, I would bet on it and not even knowing wtf I was betting on... besides all the major sports there was (WNBA, soccer, fights, whatever they had on the board). It was ridiculous to the point where I had to get away for awhile. Shoot, if they had betting on badminton, I would've bet on that too
