Let Iupati Walk in Free Agency and get a 3rd round Comp Pick in 2015 draft.

Let Joe Looney, Johnathon Martin, Al Netter, likely 2014 pick and possibly 2015 pick battle for the spot vacated by Mike Iupati.

We may also let Michael Crabtree walk in 2015.

Because he is 1 year away from being a free agent Iupati probably wouldn't garner more than a 3rd rd pick in trade value and if we can't resign him we would probably get a 3rd round compensatory pick anyway. Nothing to be gained by losing him and maybe we can resign him.

I don't think trading Iupati is a smart move UNLESS if it's for something fantastic.

He has been getting injured and I feel we won't be able to afford him later.

Still, he is a battering ram and we don't have anyone to replace his performance - yet.

This trade does not fit the Niners M.O. They will keep Iupati until they either re-sign him or he leaves via free agency and they get a high comp pick for him.

There's this thing called a salary cap. It does not allow you to keep all the players that you want. It's why Anquan Boldin was traded to us. It's why we let Delanie Walker go. Not because we wanted to, but because we had to.

The idea isnt a terrible one and i see where you are coming from. But as previously stated above, we shoult NOT trade important pieces of our team for unproven rookies in a year inwhich the goal is to win the superbowl.

Once you win the superbowl fans (us) are more forgiving when players leave for more money elsewhere and we have a down season (See Baltimore).

This is our year though. Were going to run a 2 headed RB attack with 2 of Gore, Hunter, Lattimore and the passing game will automatically improve from last year. Once Bowman returns midway or late in the season it will give our team motivation to finish the season strong and lock up that #1 NFC seed.

he has one year left on his contract so any trade value would have to come with a guaranteed extension for the team who gets him. I am not that big of a fan of Iupati so I wouldn't mind this move if it helped us move up considerably in the 1st

The only reason we would trade Iupati is because he's a free agent at the end of the year. Why would a team trade for Iupati when that's the case?

I was not advocating trading Iupati, simply asking for feedback on what his value is in a trade scenario. But he is not a once in a generation player - he has weaknesses, which others have pointed out. We may be in Superbowl mode in 2014 but in my opinion trading Iupati does not derail our chances. And it may extend the overall competitiveness of our team for 3-5 years depending upon the player(s) we get in return.

Of all the players on the team that are due the next, big contract I see Iupati as the player least likely to get that contract from the 49ers. We have tremendous depth at OL and, more importantly, the contracts for Kap and A. Smith are going to be top dollar deals. Crabtree may or may not be resigned, but I think given Boldin's age and the obvious chemistry between Kap and Crabtree, he is more likely to be resigned than Iupati. If there is a good chance we let him walk for a comp. pick next year, then why not assess his value now? For those questioning why a team would acquire Iupati with one year left on his deal - I would assume it would be a sign and trade scenario. Teams like the Raiders, with tons of cap space and a desire to fill their roster with young(er), quality players may be tempted to give a guy like Iupati a top-5 contract.

So, my apologies if the thread was garbage in your opinion. Merely trying to gauge the guy's market value. If it's higher than a third round pick in the 2016 draft, why not leverage it in 2014, with a higher pick in arguably the deepest draft in a decade?

2)the amount of lost players must be higher than the number of signed guys, both through FA, iirc. Then, it is still a question whether it will be a 3rd-rounder.
