Surprise Picks!

I hate it when I see us pick a guy I know nothing about on draft day. It is very depressing. I usually have to go study up on the guy and watch a bunch of highlights before I feel ok about the pick. It's much more fun to see us pick a guy that you know.

Let's try to avoid that this year. Use this thread to post a brief analysis of prospects that the 49ers could pick that haven't been discussed much elsewhere on the webzone.

Here are mine:

Kawann Short, DT 6'3" 299, Purdue

He has been mocked anywhere from the late 1st round to the 3rd round. He has ideal size for the 5-technique DE position in our defense. He's a solid pass rusher with great athletic ability. Here are some links:

Terrance Williams, WR 6'2" 208, Baylor

Williams is projected to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick. He's got decent size and was very productive at Baylor with and without RG3 at QB. He's got great game speed and could be a good deep threat. He needs to work on his route running, but he's a good athlete and can be coached up in that area. Here are some links:

I'll try to add more today leading up to the moment of truth. PLEASE post info on any prospect that could wind up a 49er that you think hasn't been discussed much on the webzone!

I think there has been plenty of discussion on Hunter and 49er fans on here are generally well aware of him.

Not a surprise if we take him. It would be great.

My surprise. Eddie Lacy. If he falls to the second round.
I'll add a couple more....

B.W. Webb, CB 5'10" 184 lbs

I've been shouting about Webb for a while now, but it doesn't seem like many folks have listened. He's still an unknown guy to most 49er fans. Webb's combine numbers are near the top in every category and he looked very good at the senior bowl. He has slot CB written all over him and is mostly overlooked as focus is more on guys like the Tyrann Matheiu.

Of all the guys I've mocked for 49er picks, I am most sure of this one. I think he will be one of our 3rd round picks. Here are some links:

Markus Wheaton, WR 5'11" 189 lbs

I think if we picked Wheaton, it would signify that AJ Jenkins is a bust. They are similar players. Despite his lack of good size, Wheaton is one of the better WR prospects. He's got great speed and is a deep threat. More importantly, he has a lot of experience against press coverage and is good at using his quickness to beat the jam (something we'd need him to do consistently). Here are some links:

That's a good one. We haven't talked a lot about him on here. He's been falling on a lot of mocks.
I was going to say Werner and Okafor. Both could provide pass rush and develop into 5 techs.
I don't know if Short is athletic enough to play 3-4 DE for the 49ers and he isn't big enough to play NT. Based on his pro day numbers, he is one of the least explosive DE/DT in the draft (not including NT) and I could see him falling to the 3rd round. 5.08 40 (at his pro day - usually you can add 0.1 second to get combine numbers), bad vertical (27"), bad broad jump (100"), pretty bad 3 cone and shuttle for a DE. He's probably a safe pick to fill in and rotate, but I wouldn't say he's a great athlete or fit even if he has nice size and length.

If Lattimore is gone when we pick in the late 3rd/early 4th, we might still try to get Christine Michael out of Texas A&M who has slipped because of maturity problems and injury history. Michael is the most explosive RB in the class at 5'10 220 (43" vertical, 125" broad jump, 6.69 3 cone, 4.02 shuttle - none of the other RB's put up close to those numbers and he looks fast, powerful, and explosive on tape). I think the 49ers could take a chance on either Lattimore or Michael later on if other teams let them fall.

I think we trade up and take Patterson if he falls past 19 Bigger WR can be used in run game and return game similar to Ginn only better. We will be using more 3wr sets since Boldin will be filling in for walker. So we keep 6 WR with Crabs, Boldin, Manningham, Jenkins, Patterson, Williams.
