best safety in this draft class?

I like Matt Elam and Bacarri Rambo. Phillip Thomas is real good too
Here are the top 10 S from Walter's Football. My other source was NFL.com draft profiles.

1- Vaccaro. Played both SS & FS at Texas. Proj 1st rd. Has it all, but will be long gone before Niners pick.
2- Elam. Played both SS & FS at Fla. 1st-2nd rd. Kid's a real playmaker, would be a very good pick.
3- Cyprien. SS at Fla Int. 1st-2nd rd. Projects more as SS in NFL...but is terrific player worth drafting.
4- Reid. FS at LSU. 2nd-3rd rd. Needs to improve his pass coverage, but is a stud. Might be a pick at end of 2nd rd.
5- McDonald. SS at USC. 2nd-3rd rd. Great pedigree from father Tim. However, projects more as SS.
6- Rambo. SS at GA. 2nd-3rd rd. Off-field issues could drop him into 2nd rd.
7- Swearinger. FS/SS at South Car. 2nd-3rd rd. Can really hit...good value pick late 2nd rd.
8- S. Thomas. SS at Syracuse. 2nd-4th rd. Height a concern (5-8). Great speed (4.42), showed well at East-West & Combine.
9- P. Thomas. FS/SS at Fresno St. 2nd-4th rd. Kid's a warrior...came back strong from gruesome broken leg & dislocated ankle.
10- CJ Wilcox. FS at GA Southern. 2nd-4th rd. Changed positions 3 times...offense then defense. Terrific all-around player.

All that said, if we go S early, then Elam looks like the best bet. Cyprien looks like a potential SS beast. Reid's more of a FS, but has to work on pass defense. Swearinger looks like a real value late in 2nd rd. Have to like Phillip Thomas' warrior mentality...didn't let serious leg injuries deter him from having a terrific senior season...led the nation w/8 picks.
This is the deepest safety class I can remember. Its great timing for the 49ers. I have no idea who will be the best but I'm not opposed to drafting two of these guys in April.

His Pro day on Apriil 10th will be huge... he's attempting to comeback from two surgically repaired knees.

I'm not worried about the knees, gore has had a great career with to blow ones. I love to pick this kid up in the late rounds, would be a good replacement for whitner looks like a ss at the next level. Would love a true Fs in vaccaro but were going to have to go up and get him and I would believe its worth it.

49ers had lunch with Matt Elam the day before his pro day and had another meeting with him after his pro day.

John Cyprien will also visit the 49ers at some point before the draft.

No official visit dates have been made with Kenny Vaccaro. The team met with Eric Reid during the combine and attended the LSU pro day (although no official meetings have been made). The team also attended South Carolina's pro day but no official meetings with DJ Swearinger.

Good call, played safety in HS. 6-1'' 205 good size, physical player.

Amerson is the best ball-hawk in the draft. Great potential as a free safety in the Ed Reid mold (will get lots of interceptions). Free safety job is to sometimes gamble, jump the route and get picks. Not as refined as an Ed Reid (who is?) but he has the same great instincts plus he's bigger and faster. So you try him at free safety and if it works he's an all-pro. If not he's likely to still be a good CB.

I would like a combination of Eric Reid & DJ Swearinger.
I really wouldn't mind if we drafted 2 safeties in the first 3-4 rounds. You know, go Bill Walsh on this draft! This is such a great draft class for safeties it might be a good idea to get Donte's replacement too.

exactly how i have us picking in my own mock. Elam in the 2nd and Rambo/Swearinger/P. Thomas in the 3rd.

Can someone tell me why Robert Lester from Alabama is almost totally ignored in this discussion?

I was checking my stat sheet on safeties, and just happened to notice that I did not have him on my stat sheet.

I checked his stats, and they seemed good. He had more interceptions than any of the strong safeties.

He played in 48 games, and had 24 passes defended; 14 picks and 10 passes broken up.

Thanks.

I really like him. He has the size to play SS. As you pointed out, he'd be a massive improvement in pass coverage over Whitner. I don't think he plays near the line as well as Whitner, but he could grow into a really good SS option.
