2012 Draft Needs

Nice thread. Yes they could use some youth and d line depth but it's not on top of the priority list at all. Not seeing o line on your list is troubling. Sorry but Goodwin needs to go asap. He never gets any push in the run game. The majority of run plays he's in the the backfield. And right guard needs to be addressed. I would say CB is number 1 followed by WR, OL, S,

Swop CB and WR around and you have yourself a deal.
If the team is counting on Kilgore and Person, who are projects, to take over soon, that is a big mistake. These guys are not even getting snaps in 2011. The team needs interior lineman who are starter material now.
Given who we could lose in FA, I'd say this is the priority IMO:
OG--We need an elite RG and say bye to Rachal! Heck, that Stanford guy is a beast and knows the system. Who would have thought?
WR--Edwards is not the answer and Morgan was injured and is a FA. Sign him, draft Edwards replacement. That kid from Baylor can also return just in case Ginn leaves.
OLB--We only have three true pass rushers. We need more!
NT--I keep saying we need an elite or stud NT. Ice is good, but we need more depth and Dobbs AND Williams are late rounders for a reason.
CB--Now, it's not that much of a need with Rogers and Culliver doing very well. IF T. Brown is a FA, then this position moves up. If not, Brock will compete with a FA or rook for that third spot. I really like Culliver to become our #2.
FS--Is Goldson going to resign. If not, then this position also moves up.

I hope we can land these cats in the first three rounds, but BPA is still the way to go no matter what.

However, I do believe we will target a WR and OG in the fist two rounds. A Jefferey's or Floyd pick would be awesome in the first. We need that 6-3/6-4 kind of guy.
I could see us taking a guard in the 2nd or 3rd round. I think the best thing is to just go by our top 3 needs, wr, cb, og. Whoevers the best player avaliable at those positions we take that guy.

Goldson, Smith, and Williams are all here on 1 year deals, imagine if we franchise Edwards, Ginn, or Brooks and ended up losing both Smith and Goldson to free agency. I would start panicing. However unlikely I'm just illustrating my point.

Depending on what happens with our free safety group in FA the priority of safety could jump from a near afterthought to day 1 must have.

Also not listing RG when both of the players are free agents is another head scratcher. Rachal should be shown his walking paper unless he just kills it down the stretch and even then I'm pretty scarred from watching him play already. So we're already looking at either a developmental RG behind Snyder or maybe going young and having Snyder come off the bench.

There is a good chance we spend our first 2 of our first 3 picks on RG or FS with the 3rd going to either a CB or WR.

I can promise you we wont franchise Edwards

That's why I called it UNLIKELY lol and he was only one potential franchise tag target. Goldson is far more likely to get the tag then anyone on the team.

Sorry for the double post basically. stupid google chrome.....

But thank you for seeing the same reason as me. Banking on the idea of 3 late round lineman to magically be ready for significant playing time in case we lose one or both of our RGs is just ludicrous. I read countless times on here that it was understood that they're grooming Kilgore to be a center. I'm not comfortable with the idea of having Snyder play the bulk of a game with either Kilgore or Person coming off the bench. Then there is the small fact that according to the team Person is backing up Davis at right tackle.

The idea of making a second year player switch sides or apparently in Person's case positions as a whole seems like too much of a stretch. If we have a shot a solid RG I'll be pretty pissed if we don't take him.

Flipping back to the WRs, if we've won this many games with out Edwards and Morgan I would put WR at an even lower priority then what I've originally thought. You could look at it the exact opposite that we need an insane WR to make our offense go over the top but I just don't see us spending anything earlier then a 3rd rounder unless a WR is the absolutely best player on the board and we can't find a trade parter to move back. But as demonstrated by picking Aldon and Cully Baalke isn't afraid to reach a little bit for player that the organization has faith in.

I'm going to stick to my guns that we take a CB/S in the first unless we lose Snyder in FA, which seems really unlikely -- he's 30 and the idea of him being offered big money is almost laughable. Besides why would he leave our team with so many good things happening. We might actually be able to retrain every guy that we want to retain and pick who we want to let walk.

would you go OG and C in the draft?

I posted something in my draft thread about moving back and getting Jones and Zeitler (spelling). I just have a hard time liking the idea of another first round OL pick. CB or WR has to be the main target at this point.

As this year's draft has shown, you can't judge players by where they are taken. The team held onto BOTH of these guys for a reason. We don't get to see them practice or know how their development is going but the idea that the team kept them around rather than dumping them for a veteran means they like what they can do. They might not be the answer but they certainly give the team more options. Again, the idea of going after DL is because this Unit has no other options right now! We will probably draft an OG this year, but I don't see it as the highest NEED right now.

Two picks in the same draft may be overkill, especially on a team that will lose a fair amount of free agents this season. We are going to have some holes to fill, either at CB, S, WR, or even OLB.

We'll soon see.

why a SS? We have Whitner, who is signed thru 2013.

We should be looking at FS more than a SS.
