If I could chose, and know for sure, that we could pick up a sure fire pocket passer worth anything I would want him...the problem is we don't have any for sure guys like that in the draft. Mallet is the only one that comes close and I selected him on the poll, however, I really wouldn't mind Newton at all. Newton is a game changer...period. He is a gameplan breaker. He is accurate and has a canon. He is huge and faster than most other people in the NFL...and he is a damn QB.
The fact is there has never been a player like Newton. Not Vick or Young are quite like him. He is a better passer than Young by far and he is 50 lbs. heavier and 3 or 4 inches taller than Vick.
I have to say that I would probably draft Newton becuase of his gamechaning ability, but I would have my fingers crossed about Mallet. Mallet has some serious talent and raw ability as a passer that is unmatched in recent memory....the dude is like 6'8'' or something and throws bombs like they are 5 yard passes. I think both are way better than Luck.
P.S. Doesn't Newton have one more year left?

I don't take either Mallet, Locker or Newton.
For everyone who is riding Newton's jock ... he does not make any pre-snap reads and he runs a spread option and has completed one college season. You really want to spend a top 10 pick on guy who has massive character concerns, has barely played college football, and you don't even know if he's capable of making pre-snap reads, effectively?
As far as his character issues he was booted from Florida for cheating expelled from Blinn JC and he has 13 moving violations in the last few years and no is involved in pay for play scandal ...not to mention there have been whispers that he hasn't even been attending class at Auburn recently.
As far as Locker goes inaccuracy is inaccuracy. He's a great athlete but frankly he should have picked safety as his position. He's a great athlete but in the NFL if you aren't accurate you are useless.
Mallet is intriguing but he's the case of million dollar arm nickle head. He might be worth a middle to late round 1st but you can't justify picking him in a draft deep with big time talent that help the Niners.
Luck is one of the top 3 QB prospects in the last 30 years. (Elway, Manning). He has "it" the ability to feel, the ability to read defenses, footwork, ball faking, toughness, leadership etc ... He's got a Rothlisberger feel with Manning accuracy.
Frankly, the way to go is to grab Peterson or Green and if neither are available trade down and grab Von Miller and Cameron Jordan which would shore up the defense, and draft a QB in the middle or late rounds and look towards next years draft.

The only character is mallett has ever had was a minor in possession of alcohol during the year he transferred from Michigan . He has not been caught stealing a computer, cheating on and exam, or being " pimped" by his father. He his a very competive athlete that hates to lose. He is more of a Philip Rivers type player vs the arrogant/cocky label he has been given.

I am reading more and more that Mallett does have good, not great, accuracy and that his moxie ranks right up there with Rivers of SD. At his height coupled with his arm, he would fit very nicely in a WCO. It's the mobility that concerns me.
On the flip side, Newton also has good accuracy and a rocket arm, but his mobility and elusiveness rivals that of VY and Vick, not Russell.
If Newton can sit a year and learn the details of the scheme and its nuances, he can become something special. Not only that, but he can be used on certain downs as a WildCat QB at the least. And that's another thing...Do you want a top 10 pick sitting for a year instead of a pass rusher like Quinn, a CB like Amukamara, or DT like Failey who can immediately impact our team?
Right now though, I am leaning toward Newton instead of Mallett.
Here's Mel's new top 25
1 Andrew Luck * QB6-4235
2 Da'Quan Bowers * DE6-4277
3 A.J. Green * WR6-4207
4 Patrick Peterson * CB6-1211
5 Prince Amukamara CB6-1202
6 Nick Fairley * DT6-5310
7 Ryan Mallett * QB6-7238
8 Cameron Newton QB6-6250
9 Julio Jones * WR6-4211
10 Marcell Dareus * DE6-3306
11 Robert Quinn * DE6-4267
12 Ryan Kerrigan DE6-4259
13 Von Miller LB6-3243
14 Justin Blackmon * WR6-1208
15 Akeem Ayers * OLB6-4251
16 Drake Nevis DT6-1289
17 Nate Solder OT6-9313
18 Anthony Castonzo OT6-7306
19 Adrian ClaybornDE6-3282
20 Derek Sherrod OT6-6305
21 Gabe Carimi OT6-7327
22 Mark Ingram * RB5-10216
23 Jake Locker QB6-3228
24 Rahim Moore S6-1196
25 Jon Baldwin
Mallett at 7 and Newton at 8...right where I think we are going to pick.
If Newton wins the National Championship against Oregon, his stock will only rise. Add the fact that his Combine will be the best of the QBs and you can see him going higher still.
Wow!!!! Just like Mark Sanchez. The rise is amazing especially for someone who hasn't played that much.

It's the high ceiling that intrigues people. I said earlier, if anyone is serious about this organization taking Newton, they can't expect much out of him in 2011. I'd bring him along similar to how Bill Walsh did with Joe Montana. Play very little his rookie year (bringing him in for maybe a series per game). Just have him work on fundamentals and transititoning to the pro game, mentally, and becoming a professional. In year two, ease him into the starting line-up. By year three, he should be ready to go. But this will ONLY work if we have a HC and staff that can develop QBs (Harbagh, a guy like McDaniels as offensive coordinater, a Gary Kubiak as OC if he is fired, etc).
The safe pick is to draft the best DE, WR, or CB available and get a QB later.

Might be a reach but I bet we could get Stanzi in the third round if an immediate starter at CB or DE could be selected in the second after our first round DE/CB. I might not want to chance it though.

I find it funny with all of this hype on Cam Newton, and Comparisons to Big Ben. LOL he's nowhere close to Big Ben. Look at the offense he plays in. No NFL team runs that. He's not a pocket passer. Kiper hypes him up every fkn time. Newton will be a joke.
Mallett over him but i'd rather have Luck

IDK about us NOT drafting Newton in the top 10. After all is said and done especially after the combine, both he and Mallett will be in the top 10. I am starting to like him more and more as a QB prospect for us especially if his accuracy is on par with the others if not better.
Given the careers of Russell, VY and Vick, one could see why they would possibly refrain from nabbing someone similar. However, the character and work ethic questions will arise and will be quenched.
I can't wait to see how he plays on the National Stage and then the Combine. The fact is that we need a top QB period either now or later. Given FA, I don't see too many options out there for us. However, I wouldn't mind an Orton or McNabb for one to two years while Newton learns the ropes.
We will draft a QB in this draft. Whether it's the first or third is anyone's guess. I still remember the one position that trumps all and that is the QB position.
Don't be surprised if he becomes a Niner. Just sayin'...

As a matter of course, if I had any doubt about a QB I would never take him in the first round much less the top ten.
At this point, I would take Peterson or Amukamara if available...then look to BPA.

Newton in the 1st round is too high. But... he will go about 10 in the 1st. Then he will make statements to the effect he should have gone much higher. Confident dude, isn't he? I would take him in the 2nd round, but that is not going to happen.
Ryan Mallett is the better choice, but I would not take him in the first. Has incredible size as does Sir Issac Newton. Seems more stable as QB in the pocket. Does not run as well as Newton.
Ricky Stanzi put up great numbers relative to his supporting cast Worth a 2nd round pick.
