Need comes before BPA strategy?

After reading many posts here, does it seem like we are wanting the Niners to draft for need rather than taking the best player available? IMO, drafting Spiller would address a need, but I don't think he would be the best player left when pick at 13 or even maybe at 16/17. According to Todd McShay, the four critical positions are: QB, OL, CB and Pass Rusher. RBs and WRs can be found much later in the draft. Don't get me wrong, I would be thrilled if we take Spiller, but isn't the right draft strategy is to take the best player available?

I think reaching for Oline if the 4 best OT's are off the board is drafting for need. CJ may very well be the BPA at 13. Who would you suggest otherwise? The picture will be clearer after the combine

Depends on how high Spiller ranks on team's big boards. If say the 49ers rank Spiller as the 10th best player on their board, and he's available at #13, he could be considered BPA depending on who else was available.

We shouldn't. We were on the brink of the playoffs so we have no glaring holes besides the return game which can easily be fixed via FA if we have too. We need the best available talent to push us over the edge and get us into the post season.

It's called taking the BPA at a position of need.

As a punt and kick returner, yes. Not to mention a compliment to Gore.

Not clear what exactly drafting BPA means but I think that these are elements in.

1. You do not draft a lesser player to fill a need, when you have the chance to take a truly better player.

2. You understand that you draft for the long run, not just the next season.

3. You also must understand that if you have the position filled well, you might have to pass on the BPA--but that does not necessarily mean drafting only for need.

I guess it is a mix of quality, long term and short term need.
