a different look at niners draft

I just don't see us expending our 2nd first round pick on another wide receiver, as good as Tate is. After all the hype Raye and Sing gave Morgan, and with very capable backups who have yet to get a decent shot, I think we have greater needs. Would love to have Spiller though.

I don't care how many playmakers we have (i.e. Spiller, Tate), if we do not improve the offensive line WE WILL NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. Period. The right tackle position HAS to be upgraded. I'm not talking about the way it was "upgraded" last year by signing has beens and unproven players, I'm talking about a quality, proven free agent or a first round draft pick. The guard position also needs to be addressed. However, unlike at RT we do not HAVE to use a first rounder or get a high dollar free agent. We have two guards in Baas (if he is resigned) and Rachel who have shown glimpses of very good play, however they have both been incosistent. If we bring someone in as competition to push both of these players for the starting job I think they would greatly improve in terms of consistency. Iupati is going to be a special player and I am for taking him at 17, however I don't think that is a necessity and I wouldn't be pissed off if they took a playmaker instead as long as they use #13 on a RT. We can get a quality guard in the second or third rounds or also through free agency that can push Rachel and Baas.

So with at LEAST one of our two first round picks we HAVE to get a RT. If we don't, we will not make the playoffs. Period. Anyone that has watched the niners this season would know that. With the other first round pick we COULD go for a Spiller, Tate playmaker, but in my opinion if we get Iupati Gore will return to his 2006 form and run for 1,600 yards+ wich is what Singletary and Raye invisioned from the beginning.

Not sold on Spiller at 13. Maybe 16-17.

I'd take Bulaga buddy Kyle Callaway in 3rd over Black.
But that's what makes draft interesting.

this would be such a stupid draft, let's go ahead and ignore our biggest hole the OL AGAIN in the 1st round, then let's ignore the DB and passrusher spots and draft a RB/WR? thank god your not in charge.

Any mock that doesn't spend at least one of our first rounders on an O-Lineman is a bad draft in my opinion.

I am on the use both 1st rounders on the OL bandwagon.. The Jets did it 2 years ago (Ferguson and Mangold) and look where they are.

I like 1 of the first rounders on Oline, other BPA. Best of both worlds.

I understand the argument and acknowledge that it is somewhat convincing, however, it assumes that the only way niners can improve the oline is by using a 1st rd pick on a olineman---this is not necessarily true. If pashos resigns and comes back healthy, maybe he takes the rt tackle spot opposite staley.

Also the argument presumes that an olineman will be available that is worthy of being picked with the 13th or 16th pick. Maybe there wont be!

and the mantality of taking a certain position with a certain pick no matter what, because there is a need at the position, hasnt always worked too well for niners in the past. That led to picks such as israel ifeayni because niners needed a pass rusher, mike rumph and rw mcquarters because niners needed a corner, kwame haris because niners needed a tackle and alex smith because the niners needed a quarterback.

But the performance of the o-line cannot bank on IF Pashos resigns and IF he is healthy and IF he performs at a high level and IF Baas resigns and IF Baas and Rachel can stop being so inconsistent and IF a second or third or forth rounder can come in and produce at a high level immediately.
That's a lot of IF's if ya know what I mean. We need to stop saying IF in regards to the O-line and draft two stud O-linemen.
If all of those IF's come true then great, we'll have fantastic depth at all positions in the O-line (which is a necessity in the NFL). But recent history has shown that a great majority of those IF's do not come true (see Smith, Marvell).
