49ERS release Mike Person

Person picked a great time to take the smelling salts. Watching him block, however, makes one wonder why he hasn't been starting the last 7 yrs. 3 weeks ago we had NO starting OGs. NONE. Then Laken catches fire, and then a couple weeks ago , Garnett comes alive. Just in time, but right now is a whole lot better than never. And regardless of who starts, the big plus is that we have a good OG/OT who can both backup and start...and do well at both. That is leaving our OL kind of thin, but one top flite backup is a whole lot better than NONE.

It is interesting that a position of obvious need a year ago is now a strength.

The big surprise is Person. Who would have thought he would be back in the mix?

Great call!

And add to that Garnett is really stepping up.
I didn't know Person was rated so high last year. It's no wonder he is starting for us and playing well.

3. Mike Person, San Francisco 49ers (formerly with Indianapolis)

Pass-blocking efficiency – 98.8

After coming off the board in the seventh round in the 2011 NFL Draft, Person has bounced around the league with very little to show for his journey, as he played just 69 total offensive snaps in his first four years in the league (2011-14). However, he was given the opportunity to start at center for the Indianapolis Colts in place for the injured Ryan Kelly in 2017, and he made the most of the opportunity.

Person allowed just three total pressures (three hurries) in 194 pass-blocking snaps at center in 2017, good for the third-highest pass-blocking efficiency among centers with at least 150 pass-block snaps.

Onto the next opportunity, Person signed a one-year, $915K deal with the 49ers this offseason to back up center Weston Richburg and guards Laken Tomlinson and Joshua Garnett. While it isn't a glorified role, Person adds value as a key depth player for the 49ers entering the 2018 season.

This can't be right. He allowed a huge sack to Detroit. He rolled off his guy and helped to double team with McG and a rush had a free lane to JG.

that article was talking about last yr....I believe he had something like 600 snaps without allowing a sack before he came here.
I hope Person stays on this team as at least a backup.

Yeah, he's had some incredible numbers regarding PP coming in. But this year, he's been just as big in the run game which is a bit surprising. It's obvious when he's not in there. Playing through being pretty banged up already though. That's concerning.

I thought he was the new Adam Snyder/Erik Pears/Zane Beadles. I was wrong.

I was thinking experienced, white, veteran that can play multiple positions but none of them well.

LOL.

The funny part is that Kyle even referred to him as fitting the Beadles role and that was the purpose for bringing him in. And right now, he's probably our second best OL.

Good call.
Love the thread title by the way...
He's been a pleasant surprise. Could just be a late bloomer the way he performed last year and so far this season. Another bonus is he can play just about anywhere on the OL and knows this scheme extremely well from his time in Atlanta.
