Are the Niners really intrested in Palmer?

If we resign Alex, then i say no we're not really interested.. We'd probably bring in a guy like Bulger to back him up.

And because we don't have a proven QB.

I really think he is going to end up in Seattle.

I completely agree.

I can't see us trading for Palmer because he'd probably cost more than we're willing to give, but Harbaugh giving Smith the playbook and Smith holding the practices wouldn't be what stops the deal. Harbaugh did what he had to do. He knew Alex was a smart enough guy to learn the basics of his offense and be able to start the installation process on his own, but that doesn't necessarily mean he thinks Alex can get it done on Sundays.

Hope that's true if the Hawks have to give up next year's first and second, or successive first rounders for him (which is what I think Mike Brown will demand for him). Palmer is one Aldon Smith hit away from IR.

Bulger, though clearly a guy whose best days are behind him, makes more sense than Palmer. Bulger would fight it out with Carr for the #2 spot, leaving Kaep to come along without the pressure of feeling like he is one missed block from being the starter. The loser of the Bulger/Carr battle would be cut.
As to Palmer, I will stick with the same game plan the Mike Brown has no intention of giving in to Palmer's retirement threat.

I hope by week 2 if things are looking south and palmer is still retired, we should make a serious grab for this guy. much better alternative than Culpepper imo.

What the 49ers MIGHT like to do and what Mike Brown WILL do are two different things. Having gone this far with Palmer, and having the precedent of Ochocinco, it is VERY unlikely Brown will change course now. The only way I could see him changing his mind would be with an extreme premium; say a 1st round pick, and Palmer is not worth that. afterall, Palmer's rating last year was not as good as Alex.
