Alex Smith in Free Agency

This has been tried before and has failed, but I'm feeling masochistic. This thread is to discuss his strengths and weaknesses, and where he might sign as a free agent. Where do you think he'll sign, where do you hope he signs, best/worst situations, etc. Best/Worst situation may include how he fits under Harbaugh and the 49ers. He is not under contract with the Forty-Niners, he is effectively unemployed, this thread is not for complaining about it being here vs Niner Talk. His status is no different than Jenkins or Asomugha. Referring to other members as Alex Haters and Alex Lovers can be construed as a personal attack and could result in a warning. Repeated posting of the same comment can be construed as spamming and could result in a warning. Continually bringing him up in threads that have nothing to do with him, while this thread is open, can also be construed as spamming or inciting and could result in a warning. Now....go!

I say we send him packing. If proven OC's like Norv, Martz, or even Mccarthey couldn't make it click with this guy, I don't think anyone can...

I agree. I think it's time to move on. The only caveat to that is, if the offseason is effectively eliminated, and there is some shortened form of free agency.

because of the lockout I think he will end up signing the one year contract we offered.

I think the best move for him is to actually sign with a team like the Patriots or Colts, he still young enough to sit back a few years and learn behind those 2 dudes

That's probably the smart play for him. With the right structure he could probably play effectively. But he seems to lack that confidence, borderline arrogance, it takes to be a QB.

That's what really scares me. Alex is know for poor performance when he doesn't know the system/learning a new system. With a shortened off season, he'll probably be no better than a rookie or even David Carr...

His upside is still better than Carr but if it takes a full season to start to realize that upside, we've waisted another year on this kid. Add in that it's more than likely we draft a QB to develop into next years starter, and the Alex Smith scenario makes less sense... If we're looking for a 1 year stop gap QB, go after Bulger, Hasselbeck, or even McNabb (any QB with proven West Coast ability and system knowledge).

Alex just doesn't make sense as a 1 year stop gap QB in a West Coast O...

there are a lot of reasons why it doesn't make sense for him to sign, reasons for both parties. The only reasons it makes any sense, is his familiarity with the timing of the receiving corps, and if he is the only option.

we need the lockout to end.

Alex played in the West Coast System his rookie year, we drafted him to be a West Coast QB, obviously he didnt perform well in that offense(1 TD, 11 INTs) but the point im making is he knows the system or at least he knows the principles of it. So it wont be like he is learning a completely new system.

Im not saying Alex is the future, that ship has sailed but in the current situation we are in he makes the most sense.

Sign Alex, Sign Bulger or Hasselbeck and draft 2 rookies. Let the 2 vets compete for the starting job, have the best rookie as 3rd and keep the other on the Practice squad
