VETERAN COMPETITION FOR SMITH

Quarterback Alex Smith is coming back, but would the 49ers also bring in another veteran quarterback who has started in the NFL?

"We've got scenarios that will address it in different fashions," Baalke said. "The goal has always been to bring in the best possible players we possibly can. It's going to be an open competition, whether it's the quarterback position or the linebacker position.

"Because of a new staff and because of all the changes that have taken place, nobody's guaranteed the right to start. They're going to have to come in here and earn their jobs. Now granted some have a better chance of doing that than others, we all know that."

Nah D, I would think Baalke wouldn't bring in too much of threat to Smith and Kaepernick. I'm preparing for Smith to start again, if he flops like he did in the first few games last year, he should be pulled. One things for sure this HAS TO BE his last year in SF or the beginning of his new multi-year contract. Which would mean he help lead us to a 9-7, 10-6 or whatever record AND the playoffs.

I hope you're wrong Kolohe. I want the best Niner team we can field out there and I'd hate to think we had another Front Office that's going to be more concerned with Smith's feelings than winning.

IMO Kap needs to sit and learn the entire year so we don't create another Smith...

That leaves a spot open for either a Starter or a Backup. If we can get better without breaking the bank, I hope like hell they do it.

You can't really believe the FO is sticking with Smith because of hurt feelings. Seriously?? Feelings over winning? lol

I agree with the post Kolohe made though.

Brady has had success and won a super bowls with crap WRs and an average OL.

Manning's WRs are good because of him, not the other way around......Check out what Marvin Harrison was doing pre Manning. And check out what Brandon Stokley is doing now. As if Garcon, Gonzales, etc would improve A. Smiths game...

As for a bad OL, Rivers had the s**ttiest Oline in the league and still put up phenominal numbers with Gates and V.Jackson out majority of the year.

If you put Smith on the Pats, they probably would not make the playoffs. Nothing in Smith's game shows that he can make plays, even when he has time to throw the ball.

Ask 100 experts in this league if Smith went to the pats what would happen. You may be shocked by the answer.

Who cares that the OLine did not play at a high level? I do, and most QBs and coaches do because the offense begins with line play. It is the most important aspect on offense and allows all the "skill" players to play to their ability. The 9ers line was build for smash-mouth running and blocking for the passing game was secondary. That is why Gore was able to thrive (though he could have used more help from them too) and Smith looked like he was waiting to be pounded.

As for Brady and Manning playing with all these bad OLinemen and WRs...where on earth do you get that? Have you seen how open these WRs are most games? And other than years with injuries on the lines, the OLine has been a priority on both teams.

Smith has made some excellent plays over the years, just not consistently. So that argument is out the window as well.

young 2 rice

have you seen the patriots play? they have one of the best o lines in all of the nfl

granted they do have average WR but their o line is an elite level

I was referring to the ring against the rams with his lineman Mike Compton, Joe Adruzzi, and Gregg Randall. Matt Light the only stud there.

That line was good but not elite.

i said two don't play at a high level, not the whole line.

We have receivers open as well. Smith just can't hit them.

I've seen this at least 15-20 times.

sitting kape doesn't guarantee anything. I do prefer that he do sit but if he can play then he can play period. Even though i wouldn't mind Orton out of the avail vets or JJ. I really don't want on of these older vets like mcnabb. If we gonna struggle then do it with these young kids.

I do think that alex may have figured it out. not sure how that will translate in performance. i hope for the best for him tho. This way Kape does get the chance to sit and learn. Cuz unless he has a stellar season he is still gone next yr.So consider this yr his audition for the 2012 FA market.
Where did people get this notion that receivers don't get open? Another myth conjured up by a certain group of people.

LOL @ "Brady and Manning's receivers are so wide open". More garbage. Brady and Manning have excellent accuracy. They hit receivers in stride and have excellent ball placement. How many times do you see them throw to covered receivers? That's what makes them great.

Why do some feel the need to diminish other players in order to prop up their underperforming player?

that's a natural part of any comparison. Let's not turn it in to an argument about that.

I disagree, but I've said my piece. You won't hear from me again.

i dunno about you guys but whenever i watch other teams games i always see at least 1 play sometimes more in which a WR is wide wide open i mean no one is around him

on our team i have maybe seen that a handfull amount of times in a season

You are so right. Most of the time... a crazy amount of time compared to what I see from most teams.. we have a defender right on the backs of our WRs. Problem is, we can't fully determine why that is. It's likely that most times, our WRs are not commanding the same level of respect from the DBs... sometimes, it could be a throw that arrives a little later than the ideal window... sometimes that is on the WR for a poor route... sometimes it is the QB that waited a moment longer than he should have.

That is why it is so important to analyze each play... slow motion and repeated... to get a better idea.

... but yes, other teams tend to have receivers with more space to play with than we do.

Your right, it doesn't guarantee anything. With that said though, there is a reason Kap lasted until the second round and why 5 other QBs were selected before him... I believe that any QB will do better if they know the system than if the don't. So, in order to give Kap the best chance, it makes sense to let him sit and learn for at least a year before he has to go in and try and save this team...

From my days as playing WR, I'd say the way to beat tight coverage is to have an accurate QB who can put the ball in front of the receiver or where the receiver is going to be (lead the receiver open/timing routes) instead of having a QB who holds the ball until the receiver is open.

Since were analyzing how open the receivers are, lets also analyze how many times our receivers have been thrown to in stride and how well the ball is placed to said receiver. Does the receiver have to stop and wait for the ball, does he have to reach back for it, does he have to make some ridiculous hand motion for the QB to notice him, etc...?

We only hit receivers in stride something like once every two or three games, compared to other teams that are doing this multiple times every game. So why not play our guys tight, the QB hasn't shown the ability to burn them with timing or accuracy...
