I don't see how Marc Bulger TODAY would be such an upgrade over Alex Smith. I could careless about Alex but I really hope we're not riding our hopes on the back of Marc Bulger.
I understand the need for "symbolic" changes for the "fans" but seriously? At least TRY to get a legit starter.

2006 season (injured during 2007 only polayed 2 games)
58.1% 2890 yards 16 td 16 int
alex>bulger
Just a question:
Do the completion percentages include every time Alex just throws the ball away? Because if not, those numbers are skewed.
ya cause its an incompletion
personally the only qb i want under center next year are alex smith or carson palmer no preference to either however i wouldnt give more than a 2nd to cinci
If Alex back... You can mark 2011 has a lost season.. Bulger and Hassleback would a least give us a chance.. Smith gives us no chance!
explain how bulger gives a chance and alex doesnt lol
Let's see Bulger actually won football games and lead a team to the playoffs. What has Alex done in 6 years... Oh that's right top 10 draft picks... If that your idea of a starting QB... Good luck to you.. This team can't afford to waste another year on what ifs..
Bulger 2 playoff appearances and has won ONE game. and that was 7 years ago with Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, Orlando Pace, Steven Jackson, Marshall Faulk and Martz as his head coach.
and when you look at the statistics Bulger is on a downward trend where as Alex is at a point where he will at least throw more Td's than Ints.

Bulger has a 41-54 (43.2%) record as a starting QB in his career. The last time Bulger experienced any sort of winning was SEVEN years ago in 2004 (Bulger was 26). In our horrible division, they squeaked in with a terribly unimpressive 8-8 record. Since then he's gotten progressively worse.
Bulger is 33 -- going on 34 years old now and I think people are overestimating what he has to offer. He's been beaten to a pulp. This isn't to put him down or say he absolutely can't be successful, look at Kerry Collins. But at this stage in his career, again.. we need to calm down with this "Anyone but Alex" mentality. It's just over the top, and a quick-ticket to more failure if we just think we can take any scrub or has-been and suddenly become winners.

How'll bout plan C.
No to Bulger, no to Alex. Personally I think Hassleback and a rookie is our best option. There's no fresh start for Alex. He'll get booed out of the building 1st time something goes wrong. I don't think he's a horrible QB but it's time to move on, because his turnaround will never happen here.

No legit starters are available without giving up a "king's ransom" in compensation.
A really bad year to be in the market for a starting QB.

Hasslebeck is one of my options as well. We temporarily solve a position of need and hurt a division opponent in the process. All assuming Seattle doesn't make a move at McNabb, Palmer, or Kolb.

As long as David Carrbage aint the opening day starter, assuming there is a season, almost anyone would be an upgrade.

Would much rather have Hasselbeck than Bulger who's more familiar with the WCO. Hasselbeck is more of a leader on the field, every time I see Bulger messing up he hangs his head low like Alex Smith.

Bulger would be one of my last choices for veteran starting QB.
Would rather choose from one of the following in this order:
A. Palmer (via trade/waiver wire)
B. McNabb (via trade/waiver wire)
C. Orton (via trade)

If we could get anyone of those guys in a player for player trade I'd be all for it. Or if it took only a mid round pick to acquire one of them I'd be all for it. But I'd much rather like to hold onto our draft picks and build from there.
I use to be all for Palmer coming to the 9ers, but that was before Harbaugh started talk of bringing back the roots of the WCO. I look at Palmer more of a digit system QB or Coryell type QB, pocket passer who utilizes a lot of play-action down field passing. Rather than a short to medium timing passer.
......Dammit, this CBA crap is really pissing me off. There's supposed to be action going on in free agency right now, instead we're still thinking about our wish list'.

I dont disagree Hasselbeck is a legit, quality QB when healthy, but he is a Seachickens QB. Even if we win with him, it just wouldn't feel right to me. No thanks.

i dont care who our qb is, i just want to see this damn team win
if hasselbeck is a 9er next yr so be it, wont have no problem seeing him picking apart the seahawks for low balling him or letting him go. hasselbeck would be the perfect bridge for a young qb coming into the wco

Has Bulger ever ran the WCO?
Not under Martz, but Bulger certainly has the skill-set to be effective in the WCO....Quick release, very accurate when he actually had talent around him in St. Louis....Good timing-based passer.
Tough as hell too...Dude took a pounding his last few years in STL.
Very well explained to these idiots! Bulger is a perfect fit for Harb! Our O-Line is only getting better with the two young guys! Gore coming back, VD, Crab. He would put points on the board! He can start for a couple yrs for us. Hes more than a backup like most idiots on here keep saying!
Definitely. He's a strong choice for our starter. I rea a while back that the Ravens loved Bulger and that's he's been throwing the ball since great since he's been there.
He's a smart guy, he's accurate and he probably still has the quickest release in the league. He fits the WCO nicely. Bulger was one of the better QBs in the NFL prior to his injuries. If we can get him healthy, it could pay huge dividends. Plus, we would have a suitable starter while Harbaugh grooms a younger guy.
Im not against this, Not after TKO, and Walt Harris! I think adding a vet is a great idea to the qb spot, hopefully he does ok so the fans don't boo and ask for the rookie to play like the eagles!

I just got through reading the ARIZ fan forum, and they are fiercely debating whether the Cardinals should go after Bulger to be their stop-gap QB while whatever rookie QB they draft is developed.
Of course Kolb and Alex Smith came up and were thrown into the debate. I hate to mention it, but there were some guys who were really making the case that Smith should be their guy. They were dragging out many of the same stats that have been scrutinized here. Many agreed that Alex seemed to perform better during recent years than Kolb or Bulger, especially considering the strength of their coaches and supporting casts.
Just saying.
