What Is the Niner's Strategy Re A. Franklin?

Franklin can tendered Franklin, but it would be well below market and he would be happy to test the f*gency. One thing is certain, tagging him under the previous rules is not an option. In doing so would make him the highest defensive player on the team and one of the highest paid 49ers on the team (AB I'm believe I remember reading this somewhere).

The team may have plans to bring in someone Fangio has identified. I'm sure it's been discussed that we don't have a starting NT under contract. We tried Soap at NT and that wasn't very successful. He's a much better DE than a NT in a 3-4. It's not as simple as "sliding over".

We tried Sopoaga as a 2 gap NT. As a 1 gapper, he should be much better. Moving him means we are pretty thin at DE though... thin anyway with Evans a FA, young and unproven Tukuafu, and RayMac a tendered player.

Evans is just about worthless - I hope he goes

Well yeah, agreed... but point is, our DL depth is a bit thin. Really surprised that we did nothing in the draft to remedy that.

Don't say that
I bet Franklin stays. He did not do well enough to warrant a huge contract from anyone.

I'm pretty sure the Washington Foreskins would love to over pay him.

I expect there will be 4-6 teams that will be bidding for him.

Jason Lockyourmamma just said on NFL total access he thinks Franklin will get big cheddar in FA. He thinks Redskins will be a good landing spot if Hanyesworth doesn't stick.
I wouldn't hate a Smith-Ice-Mcdonald line. Of course that basically leaves RJF as the only legit backup. I would expect them to add depth cheaply rather than get into a bidding war over Franklin.
This is going to be our biggest challenge right here imo. We can't compete with the other teams or what? He'll be in demand but I think we would be the frontrunners if we showed interest in resigning him. He has a chance to be a big part of a special defense. Aver que pedo.
theyll probably let him go to sign alex smith, and bring back rashaun woods.
