Although not Mortensen

Posted by Mike Florio on September 27, 2010 7:59 PM ET
The Bills surprisingly dumped quarterback Trent Edwards on Monday, a day after word broke that they were trying to trade him.

So now Edwards, who is in his fourth NFL season, will be required to pass through waivers. ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that multiple claims are expected to be made.

And here's where things get potentially interesting. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells us that the 2009 standings control all waiver claims made through today; as of September 28, the 2010 records determine dibs.

This could result in a team like the 0-3 49ers (whom we're told like Edwards) losing out on the Stanford product to the 2-1 Seahawks (whom we're told also like Edwards), given that the 49ers finished 8-8 last year and the Seahawks finished 5-11.

The 2009 priority would apply regardless of the fact that the Seahawks beat the 49ers in Week One, 31-6.

Here's some advice to the Competition Committee. If two of the teams making a claim have played each other in the current year, the prior year's finish shouldn't matter. In that circumstance, the team that lost the head-to-head meeting in the current year always should have priority over the team that won the game.
Cut Alex Smith, Promote Nate Davis to Starter, Sign Trent Edwards....8-8 Division Winner

I don't think i would be very excited if we signed a QB who was not good enough to be on a Buffalo's roster.

Stay tuned. Edwards' contract will be awarded to a new team at 4:00 p.m. ET today. The only safe bet at this point is that the team claiming him won't be the Bills. Will it be us?
Trent Edwards atleast looked promising as a franchise qb which is more than you can ask for in a backup qb. I'm all for it. He's a less stop-gap solution for backup qb than David Carr or Troy Smith. Plus what better of a mentor for Andrew Luck next year than a fellow Stanford boy

The winless Lions, Browns and Panthers have not put in a waiver claim on QB Trent Edwards, so if San Fran did he is theirs.

If the San Francisco 49ers put in a waiver claim for free-agent quarterback Trent Edwards, they will be awarded him, according to league sources.

There's no need to fret about missing any games. You can watch every contest again with Game Rewind. Get more information here.

The 49ers have been linked to the former third-round pick, who played college ball nearby at Stanford.

According to league sources, the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers, who all have 0-3 records, have not placed claims on Edwards. Besides the Buffalo Bills, the team that released Edwards, San Francisco is the only other winless club. Given the 49ers' record and the fact no other winless team has put in a claim on Edwards, he would be theirs.

At this point in the season, waivers are based off of the records in 2010 thus far, from worst to best in inverse order.

Edwards started the Bills' first two games, but he was replaced by Ryan Fitzpatrick, who led the Bills to 30 points in a loss at New England.

Maybe Trent Edwards will never be a #1 QB. But given his starting experience he is definitely a solid #2 and a great #3. What more could you realistically want out of a backup QB? The guy would be a solid option off the bench for almost any team.

Again, Trent Edwards may never be a #1, but he didn't exactly have a ton to work with out in Buffalo. That's just the way it is.

Actually I think they had better overall talent on offense than we did or do. Although I think we had the better offensive line, but not by much.
as a bills fan I can only laugh at you and your team for that you just added a player who doesn't belong in the nfl. Well played!

_________

I don't see it. We have a probowl tight end and an O-line made mostly of 1st or 2nd round picks. On top of that we have a top RB and average WR talent. Our offense, as a unit, has more potential than most. It's just a matter of utilizing the talent. But you know what they say about potential...

In contrast, the Bills have almost nobody of consequence on the O-line. Their RB play has been average (Jackson had a good year, Lynch was one and done, Spiller gets no playing time as a rookie). Lee Evans has always been an average receiver, rarely a game breaker. I like Parrish, but he isn't a top 40 WR by any means. Plus, they have no TE to speak of.

I'm not saying that Trent Edwards is all-world. I'm not even saying he is an average starting QB. I'm just saying that given his experience he would make a solid option off the bench. He has more experience than many back-up QBs.
