I think we ought to sign every washed up, cast off and cut player from every sub .500 team.

That way we could lose to all the sub .500 teams.

Geez, the Raiders cut him.

For that matter, maybe Fred Dean and Charles Haley are ready to come out of retirement. Maybe we could bring back OJ for a change of pace back.

Thank you for saying what need to said. I hate this time of year just because of posts like these.

He had more sacks than anyone on the 49ers did

And right now our 4th OLB is Darryl Briggs, who looks better than most D2 undrafted rookies. But still, we could use more quality back ups there.

Ellis in a 3-4 has been pretty darn good. Would be cheaper than Joey Porter without bring the a*****e attitude

Why invest money on a 34 year old who MAY last one or two years at the most when we can draft someone just as good and control their rights for a minimum of 4 years?

It allows us to focus on our other needs early in the draft, like RT, OG, WR, S and KR/PR. I don't think OLB is a big need. A steady rotation of Ellis, Haralson and Brooks would be fine.

The Niners have 8 draft picks plus a comp coming. They also will be able to sign UDFA's after the draft. That is plenty of ammunition to address all their needs.

Of the 8 draft picks about 5 aren't gonna do anything. Getting a proven player for one of our needs is a good thing.

If you want to use that argument, what is the guarantee that Ellis will perform at a high level next year?

Ellis performing moderately well (6+sacks) is much more closer to a guarantee than a rookie who has never done anything in NFL do that.

ya we need to make some moves in free agentcy i wouldnt mind us getting Ellis or joey porter great one year options that wont cost much. come on john york a semi good free agentcy and a good draft equals = better team
He wouldn't make it out of training camp without getting injured. The answer is NO.

If you had named this thread "Should Niners go after Alex Smith's b***h" instead, I'd have realized faster who you were taking about. The answer is still no though.
