Why the 49ers did not select USC’s Dwayne Jarrett

Apr 28, 2007 at 6:40 PM--

According to Matt Maiocco's Draft Blog, the 49ers do not seem to be as high on USC WR Dwayne Jarrett as most Trojan fans. The 49ers could have selected Jarrett with their second round pick but instead decided to trade it (along with a fouth rounder) to the Colts for their 2008 first round pick.

From Matt Maiocco's blog:
The 49ers -- like so many other teams -- were convinced that Jarrett just doesn't have the speed to create separation against NFL cornerbacks.

Nolan said "We're still looking, I believe there are still some good players on the board at that position, as well as some others."

Why the 49ers checked the boxes for DE Clelin Ferrell

By David Bonilla
Mar 16

The San Francisco 49ers have to be an ideal landing spot for any player. The team has been to the NFC Championship three times and made a Super Bowl appearance in the last four seasons. For one free-agent defensive lineman, the Niners checked a lot of boxes. "I think for me, I really just fell in love with the way that they play defense here," Clelin Ferrell said on Thursday, speaking with 49ers reporters for the first time. Defensive line coach Kris Kocurek was a big draw too. Knowing the coach's background and success in bringing out the best in his players contributed to the decision to sign with the 49ers. Ferrell added, "So it was just kind of checking that box, for sure." The 49ers weren't the only team expressing strong interest

Why decision to return to 49ers was easy for Jake Brendel; Center discusses Javon Hargrave signing

By David Bonilla
Mar 19

Jake Brendel had suitors in free agency. Several teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, were interested in the veteran center. Ultimately, much to the delight of fans, he returned to the Niners, his NFL home since 2020. Brendel played 1,252 snaps this past season, by far the most of his career. His 62.9 overall, 71.8 pass-blocking, and 61.9 run-blocking Pro Football Focus grades were each the second-highest of his career. Despite being in the league since 2016, Brendel played just 250 total snaps before this past season, so he lacks the wear and tear of most 30-year-old offensive linemen. The center still feels like his career is just getting started, and his play is on the rise. "Honestly, I

Why Sam Darnold Is the Perfect Fit for the 49ers

By Wayne P. Brown
Mar 14

The 49ers agreed to terms on a one-year deal with free agent quarterback Sam Darnold. The former first-round pick—number three overall—of the 2018 draft has had his ups and downs in his first five years in the league. Darnold has completed 1,054 of his 1,765 pass attempts for a 59.7 completion percentage throughout his career. He has thrown for 11,767 yards, 61 touchdowns, and 55 interceptions, per Pro Football Focus. What makes Sam Darnold the perfect fit for the San Francisco 49ers? The first thing that comes to mind is his age. Sam Darnold is 25 years old. When the 49ers mentioned looking into a veteran quarterback, most assumed their selection would be a more seasoned veteran like Andy Dalton or Marcus Mariota. Instead, the 49ers

Jason Kelce: 49ers adding Javon Hargrave "not going to make it any easier" for Eagles

By David Bonilla
Mar 19

Adding Javon Hargrave was a huge (and shocking) addition by the San Francisco 49ers. While it seems like a perfect fit and addresses a significant team need, no one saw it coming. The Niners didn't have considerable salary cap space, so signing Hargrave to a four-year, $84 million deal was unexpected. The former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle, nicknamed "Grave Digger," joins a defensive line that includes NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead, bolstering the middle of that unit. One of the defender's former teammates is happy for Hargrave and his financial good fortune. However, he also knows the loss could be problematic for the defending NFC champions in the upcoming season. "I'm happy for my man, Grave Digger," Eagles
