Why the 49ers did not select USC’s Dwayne Jarrett

Apr 28, 2007 at 6:40 PM--

According to Matt Maiocco's Draft Blog, the 49ers do not seem to be as high on USC WR Dwayne Jarrett as most Trojan fans. The 49ers could have selected Jarrett with their second round pick but instead decided to trade it (along with a fouth rounder) to the Colts for their 2008 first round pick.

From Matt Maiocco's blog:
The 49ers -- like so many other teams -- were convinced that Jarrett just doesn't have the speed to create separation against NFL cornerbacks.

Nolan said "We're still looking, I believe there are still some good players on the board at that position, as well as some others."

Steve Palazzolo is a senior analyst at Pro Football Focus. He recently released his latest first-round mock draft, which isn't necessarily based on what he thinks each NFL team will do with each selection. This one is based on what Palazzolo believes is best for each organization and the picks he would make if the decision were up to him. As is the case with most mock drafts, Palazzolo has quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson going No. 1 and No. 2 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets, respectively. That brings us to the decision for the San Francisco 49ers. The team traded up to the No. 3 spot last month to acquire a quarterback of the future. They can choose between Justin Fields of Ohio State, Trey Lance of North Dakota State, or Mac Jones of

The former Alabama quarterback is being touted as a lock to the Niners, who own the No. 3 overall draft pick, and Al and Zain aren't happy about it. The duo discusses the following: What to make of all the Jones-to-49ers speculation The lack of evidence to back it up Why Garoppolo returning could turn into a circus Who should be the pick at No. 3? Shockwaves reverberated around the NFL last month when the 49ers traded up with the Miami Dolphins to the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. By giving away its first- and third-round picks in 2022, and another first-rounder in 2023, San Francisco made its mega move in upgrading the quarterback room for its foreseeable future. While the team has maintained a public stance of keeping current quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for this coming season, this trade signified its dissatisfaction with Garoppolo's services, as the 49ers are expected to select his successor with their third overall pick in the draft at the end of this month. Most predict that the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Jets, who hold the first and second overall picks in this year's draft,

Richard Sherman explains why drafting Justin Fields makes sense for the 49ers

Mac Jones versus Justin Fields or Trey Lance. That is the big debate when it comes to the San Francisco 49ers and the 2021 NFL Draft. While the latter two names are more likely to excite the fanbase, there is a lot of speculation that the former might be the pick at No. 3 overall. One former 49ers defender, cornerback Richard Sherman, doesn't assume it will be Jones, though. He actually sees Fields as the perfect fit for San Francisco, assuming Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson are taken with the first two selections. Cornerback Tre'Davious White, the most recent guest on the Cris Collinsworth Podcast, which Sherman co-hosts, also believes the 49ers will select Fields. It isn't easy to fathom that San Francisco surrendered multiple first-round picks and a
