49ers-Browns trade stalled by Colin Kaepernick’s salary

Mar 11, 2016 at 10:29 AM--

Michael Silver wrote a great breakdown of the current situation surrounding the possible trade of San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick to either the Denver Broncos or Cleveland Browns. Reports have stated that Kaepernick would not mind going to either franchise if a deal can be worked out. However, it is not Kaepernick's call to make. It is the 49ers'.

So what is stalling a trade?

For the 49ers and Broncos, while Kaepernick's salary is not really an issue, the compensation for Kaepernick is. Silver had the following to say within his article.

"The Broncos and 49ers remain apart on compensation, with San Francisco seeking a second-round draft pick in exchange for Kaepernick. The Broncos have had discussions with Kaepernick's agents about a restructured deal for the quarterback, and a source familiar with the conversations characterized those talks as productive."

As for the 49ers and Browns, talks are stalled by Kaepernick's salary, not compensation. That part has been generally agreed upon. The Browns would not want to pull the trigger on the trade if they believe that they cannot have him on the roster for the right price. Silver says the following.

"As of Friday, talks between the Browns and Kaepernick's agents on a restructured deal had not progressed to a point that would satisfy the quarterback enough to green-light the arrangement. The 49ers and Browns, meanwhile, are in general agreement regarding the draft-pick compensation that it would take to acquire Kaepernick."

Silver goes on to state that if a trade cannot be worked out, the 49ers are not afraid to simple keep Kaepernick on the roster and have him compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job under new head coach Chip Kelly.

You can read Silver's full report on the situation at NFL.com.

It's that last item that is the most interesting. It would seem rather awkward to have Kaepernick on the roster competing to start for a team that he doesn't even want to play for. It could be the truth or it could be an effort by the 49ers to get the Broncos or Browns to move things along.

Meanwhile, the Broncos traded with the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback Mark Sanchez, which some feel doesn't have much of an impact on their desire to pursue Kaepernick from the 49ers.

The Broncos are trying to find a replacement for retired quarterback Peyton Manning. That man was thought to be Brock Osweiler, but he shocked the Broncos by deciding to sign with the Houston Texans.

Meanwhile, the Browns are trying to move on from former first-round pick Johnny Manziel, who was finally officially released on Friday morning.

According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, the San Francisco 49ers have not discussed a potential trade with quarterback Trey Lance. That shouldn't surprise anyone, but the coach was asked about trade discussions after Tuesday's practice. Second-year quarterback Brock Purdy is trending well in his recovery from surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. He is doing some limited throwing about three times a week and will ramp up his workload in the coming months. The 49ers ended their offseason workout program on Wednesday with their final session of mandatory minicamp. But before they made their way out the door for the summer, the team gave fans and reporters one last dose of info in the form of the final media sessions of the spring. Among those speaking to reporters on Wednesday were defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, left tackle Trent Williams and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, as well as defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Each session produced some interesting tidbits, which we'll review in this version of 49ers notebook. Hargrave speaks Despite being the splash free agent addition of the offseason for the 49ers, Javon Hargrave had not met with the team's beat reporters in person before Wednesday.

PFF: 49ers' elite roster is reason for optimism despite "up in the air" QB situation

Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus went through all 32 NFL teams and picked a reason for optimism for each heading into the 2023 season. For example, last season's five-win Denver Broncos got a new Super Bowl-winning head coach in Sean Payton. Kenny Pickett could be ready for a second-year leap with the Pittsburgh Steelers (Hopefully, not in Week 1, though). What's the reason for optimism for the San Francisco 49ers? Sikkema admits that picking just one reason is challenging, so he went with the team's elite roster. San Francisco has stockpiled talented playmakers at almost every level. "Yes, their quarterback situation is still up in the air," wrote Sikkema. "But

Adam Rank projects 49ers' 2023 MVP, breakout star, says it's "Super Bowl or bust for the team"

NFL Media personality Adam Rank recently published his "State of the 2023 San Francisco 49ers" feature for NFL.com, an annual look at the state of the franchise and projections for the upcoming season. Among those predictions are the team's most valuable player and breakout star. Christian McCaffrey is the most obvious choice for MVP, and he's the guy Rank selected. The star running back was traded in late October to the 49ers and still contributed 1,210 total yards and 10 total touchdowns with his new team, totaling an impressive 1,880 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season. Rank can't wait to see what McCaffrey does for an encore
