49ers fire defensive coordinator Eric Mangini

Jan 22, 2016 at 1:48 PM--

According to Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, the San Francisco 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Eric Mangini.

Mangini held the job on Jim Tomsula's staff last season. He, along with Mike Vrabel, were interviewed for the position on Kelly's staff. Vrabel turned down the 49ers to remain the linebackers coach with the Houston Texans.

The 49ers defense has a lot of room for improvement. In 2015 under Mangini, the unit finished 18th in points allowed, 29th in total yards allowed, 27th in passing yards allowed, and 29th in rushing yards allowed.

Linebackers coach Jason Tarver, who remains employed by the 49ers, remains a candidate for the job along with Baltimore Ravens linebackers coach Don Martindale. Tarver has been the defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders while Martindale was a defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos.

Many believe the Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch connection starts with Lynch, a Hall of Fame safety, having played for Shanahan's father in Denver. However, the 49ers general manager believes their team-building philosophy actually started with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While there was no overlap between Lynch's time playing for Tampa Bay and the 49ers head coach's time as a quality control coach there, the time with the Buccaneers helped mold how the two would create San Francisco's roster upon taking it over in 2017. "In Tampa, clearly, things started up front," Lynch explained during the 49ers' State of the Franchise event. "That was very much the philosophy, and it's easy to have that philosophy when you have guys like Warren Sapp and Simeon Rice. It helped win us

However, he has his sights set on returning to the game he loves before then, not as a player but in the front office. "I want to stay around football," Gore said this week on KNBR's Tolbert & Copes show. "I've been talking back and forth with Jed (York), so I'm going to see about John (Lynch), being
