49ers scouts talk with QB Vernon Adams at East-West Shrine Game practice

Jan 18, 2016 at 8:03 PM--

Let the 2016 NFL Draft speculation begin! Ryan Sakamoto of Ninerfans.com reports that San Francisco 49ers scouts spoke with Oregon QB Vernon Adams Jr. following the first practice in preparation for the East-West Shrine Game.

The 49ers will likely be on the hunt for a quarterback in this year's draft. Right now, the team has Blaine Gabbert, Colin Kaepernick, and Dylan Thompson on the roster. Gabbert finished the season as the starter after Kaepernick was benched and later placed on IR. Thompson spent much of the season on the practice squad before being elevated to the 53-man roster to serve as Gabbert's backup.

Adams was First Team All-Big Sky Conference in 2013 and 2014. He was the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year during those same years.

The East-West Shrine Game is on Saturday at 1 PM Pacific on NFL Network.

The San Francisco 49ers were the lone NFC West squad that failed to win its 2020 opener. Kyle Shanahan's team lost 24-20 to the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Stadium. Earlier on Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks beat the Atlanta Falcons 38-25. Later, the Los Angeles Rams beat the Dallas Cowboys 20-17 in the first game at SoFi Stadium — albeit without fans to watch. That means the 49ers start their 2020 season, which the team was so eager to begin as it attempts to make amends from February's Super Bowl loss, in last place within the NFC West.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR on Friday morning and shared some injury updates. All eyes during practices this week have been on the statuses of wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk (hamstring) got back on the practice field on Thursday, but Samuel remained sidelined as he recovers from a Jones fracture in June. Shanahan was asked about Samuel's status for Sunday when the 49ers open the season by hosting the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Stadium. "I haven't gotten an update from the trainers yet," Shanahan said on the Murph & Mac show, "but I'm really hoping they're going to get out and practice today. I know we got Aiyuk out there yesterday, and he looked good. Deebo wasn't able to get out there

49ers-Cardinals: Deebo Samuel misses another practice, making his availability for Sunday unlikely

The San Francisco 49ers got one wide receiver back this week, as rookie Brandon Aiyuk returned to practice. It doesn't look like they will be as lucky with another injured wideout. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch were hopeful to have second-year receiver Deebo Samuel on the field with Aiyuk on Sunday. That now seems unlikely after Samuel wasn't out on the practice field with his teammates on Friday. He has not practiced with the team since suffering a Jones fracture in June. No Deebo
