Before today's practice, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters and shared several injury updates. First, he confirmed that defensive lineman Kevin Givens (ankle) and running back JaMycal Hasty (ankle), who the coach previously said would be out "a while," will both head to injured reserve. Running back Elijah Mitchell was also injured during the team's Week 2 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Shanahan initially hoped his shoulder injury was just a stinger but told reporters today that it was a bit worse without revealing the specifics of the injury. "Elijah Mitchell has a shoulder, will not practice," Shanahan said. "... A little worse than a stinger, so that's why he can't go today. He's got a chance at Sunday." Defensive

Which players line up at running back for the San Francisco 49ers against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night is something that remains to be seen, but the 49ers are holding out hope that one of them will be rookie Trey Sermon, who is among a number of players currently battling injury at the position. Sermon is in the league's concussion protocol due to a hit he took during his lone carry in the 49ers' 17-11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on September 19 but has seemingly been showing positive signs of recovery during practice this week. The team's offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel briefly discussed Sermon's status with reporters after practice on Thursday, saying that Sermon is trending upward at the moment but that the 49ers will need to continue to prepare as if he

Aside from an injury-plagued 2020 campaign, the San Francisco 49ers defense has found success in recent years when the often-punishing pass rush has created problems for opposing quarterbacks. To win on Sunday against the visiting Green Bay Packers, Nick Bosa knows that the pass rush will have to cause nightmares for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. "You try your hardest to do [stop him]," head coach Kyle Shanahan said of Rodgers this week. "He's been making people look bad for a long time. But yeah, if you let him get comfortable at all, I think everyone knows what that result is." Bosa got to Rodgers once in the NFC Championship Game two seasons ago. He

Joe Staley explains why conditioning changes may be reason behind 49ers' injury woes

Is recent history repeating itself? The San Francisco 49ers have already lost two starters for the season in cornerback Jason Verrett and running back Raheem Mostert. In addition, a report surfaced today that linebacker Dre Greenlaw will undergo core muscle surgery and miss six to eight weeks. The early losses have to remind players, coaches, and fans of the nightmare that was 2020 when the 49ers suffered through one of the most injury-plagued single seasons in two decades. Even in 2019, when San Francisco earned a trip to the Super Bowl, it had to endure several in-season injuries
