San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason has been a standout this season, amassing 447 rushing yards and three touchdowns on a league-leading 91 carries. Mason is on pace for an impressive 1,900 rushing yards, having already surpassed his yardage from each of his previous two seasons. He has also rushed for 100 or more yards in three of the team's four games.
After Friday's practice, veteran offensive lineman Trent Williams spoke with reporters ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. When Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated asked Williams about Mason, the All-Pro lineman made an intriguing comparison, likening the 49ers running back to a Pro Football Hall of Fame nominee.
"He reminds me of Marshawn Lynch a little bit," Williams said. "He's got a little 'Beast Mode' in him."
Lynch wore number 24 with the Seattle Seahawks, which is coincidentally the same number Mason wears with the 49ers. While Williams acknowledged that similarity, he emphasized that the comparison runs deeper than just the jersey number.
"When you look at just how hard he runs, his cuts, as big as Marshawn was, he had the feet of a ballerina," Williams said. "You watch him out there making people miss all over the field, or he can run you over. I think it's the same thing kind of with Mason."
When asked about the experience of blocking for Mason, Williams didn't hold back his praise.
"It's a joy because he can run through arm tackles," Williams said. "He runs hard, man. He runs hard. And you just know it's gonna take a committee to bring him down. So, you just think of getting a guy like that to the second level, to where the smaller guys are. You're typically gonna have a lot of success with a guy that runs like he does."
