Jason Verrett on re-signing with 49ers: 'My heart was always with San Fran'

Jason Verrett enjoyed dipping his toes into the free-agency waters. The veteran cornerback ended up re-signing with the San Francisco 49ers on a one-year deal, but it wasn't due to a lack of interest from other teams. He opted to bet on himself again, as he did last offseason, and prove to skeptics that he can stay healthy while playing at a high level. It also feels good to stay with something familiar. "[Free agency] was a good experience," Verrett told reporters via Zoom on Monday. "It always feels good to be wanted, but my heart was always with San Fran. I love the comradely we've got with the team, the coaches, staff, training staff, the amazing fans, the whole nine yards. I was happy that we [were] able to get a deal done, and I'm just excited to see what

Ultimately, the cornerback opted to stay with the familiar, which meant re-signing with the San Francisco 49ers. "All the (offered) deals were pretty similar, at the time," Williams told reporters on Tuesday. "I just chose the Niners. I couldn't deny playing with some of my teammates, you know what I mean? In our secondary, we've got Jimmie (Ward), Jaquiski (Tartt), we've got Jason (Verrett), all those guys. Just being able to play one more year with those guys was just too intriguing to me." Williams visited with the Chiefs before re-signing with San Francisco. Understandably, he didn't want to discuss the Lombardi Trophy from Super Bowl LIV that was

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields had an impressive throwing session during Tuesday's pro day in Columbus. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch weren't in attendance, but assistant general manager Adam Peters and a small contingent of San Francisco 49ers staff were. Shanahan and Lynch hope to catch up with Fields later. The duo was in Tuscaloosa to watch Mac Jones at Alabama's pro day. "We talked to (agent) Dave Mulugheta the other day, and he said that they'd be able to set up another [workout for Fields]," Shanahan told reporters on Monday. "That's why we chose Alabama. I'm excited to see him eventually in person. I've also got a lot

Ben Linsey of Pro Football Focus went through all 32 NFL teams and tried to look one or two years in the future to project areas of need for each. Maybe a certain position group is considered among the team's strengths now, but will that be the case down the road? He then tried to find a good draft prospect—at a good value—to fill that potential need. "The respective prospect pairings for those teams all stand out as good value for where they would be selected," wrote Linsey, "and their selection would serve as a preventative measure to maintain strength at that position for years to come." For the San Francisco 49ers, it was the running
