Could rookie Trey Lance's first NFL start be on the horizon? San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before today's practice and provided an update on starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The veteran passer will not practice today during the team's first of three practices this week. The 49ers coach added that Garoppolo has not been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, though. "It's better today, which is good news," Shanahan said. "Not enough, though, to let him go [in practice], but also not enough to rule him out. The doctors still say [to] give him another day. The results were mixed for 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance after being unexpectedly called upon to play the entire second half during a 28-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Lance was inserted into the game to start the second half after it became apparent during halftime that starter Jimmy Garoppolo wouldn't be able to take the field due to an assumed calf injury he sustained early in the game. Lance finished the game with 157 yards and two touchdowns on 9-of-18 passing while rushing for 41 yards on seven carries, but was unable to dig the 49ers out of the hole they found themselves in after the Seahawks scored two quick touchdowns early in the second half. The appearance marked the first extended action of the regular season for Lance, who had

However, by the end of halftime, it became apparent that the San Francisco 49ers quarterback might be a liability on the playing field. He couldn't put enough pressure on his right leg, which meant not being able to add power to his throws. "My calf is kind of where I get all my power from, so it definitely affected some [of my throws in the first half]," Garoppolo said. Rookie Trey Lance started the second half. However, some offensive stalls and special teams miscues put the 49ers in a hole after entering halftime tied with the Seattle Seahawks. San Francisco lost 28-21, fell to 2-2, and now
