Peter King betting a healthy Jimmy Garoppolo can hold off 49ers rookie Trey Lance

By David Bonilla

Peter King of NBC Sports — and everyone else really — is giving Jimmy Garoppolo a lot of credit this offseason for saying and doing all the right things, even as his team brought in his replacement. Garoppolo has been the unchallenged starter since his first game appearance after being traded from New England to San Francisco in 2017. He was seen as the quarterback of the future, and in the ensuing offseason, was handed a contract that solidified that. Three years later, his successor is on the roster. The 49ers traded up to No. 3 overall to select Trey Lance of North Dakota State. Understandably, Garoppolo wasn't happy about the decision. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have been honest with their veteran

The connections to some of the all-time great safeties are strong for 49ers rookie Talanoa Hufanga as he begins his NFL career. Hufanga, who was selected by the 49ers in Round 5 of the 2021 NFL Draft after a standout career as a safety at USC, is currently at 49ers facilities with other members of his draft class as he prepares for rookie minicamp this weekend (Friday-Saturday). He spoke to reporters on Wednesday about his relationship to three legendary safeties in particular in Troy Polamalu, 49ers legend Ronnie Lott, and 49ers general manager John Lynch. Hufanga first spoke about Polamalu, with whom he has a well-documented relationship after the

Add San Francisco 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett to the list of players changing their jersey numbers this offseason. On April 21, the NFL approved a proposal that relaxes the jersey number rules of certain position groups, opening the door for wide receivers, defensive backs, and some others to wear single-digit numbers. On Monday, safety Jaquiski Tartt revealed that he is switching from No. 29 to No. 26. Of course, that doesn't really fall into the rule change. Verrett, however, is switching from No. 22 to No. 2, the number he wore at TCU. It will be his second number change since joining the 49ers in 2019. His initial number was 27. Michael Lombardi convinced 49ers altered draft plans due to outside pressure

By David Bonilla

Many felt the San Francisco 49ers were targeting Mac Jones of Alabama when they traded up to the No. 3 overall pick on March 26. They were wrong. Trey Lance of North Dakota State was the target, per general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. Jones was a safety net behind Lance and Justin Fields of Ohio State. At least, that is what we have been told since the draft. Shanahan started doing a deep dive into Lance's film in January, and the more he watched, the more he got excited. During his vacation in Cabo San Lucas, he spent time reviewing the young quarterback's film, sending his notes to Lynch, sometimes in the middle of the night. Shanahan liked Jones too and was fine drafting him at No. 12 — their pre-trade draft slot. But Lance, on the
