Barlow to start Sunday; competition to continue with Gore

Aug 20, 2006 at 10:30 AM--

SF49ers.com reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said Saturday, Aug. 19, that RB Kevan Barlow will start the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 20. "Kevan is starting and we'll do the same thing as last week. (Kevan and RB Frank Gore) are both competing still. I'm going to let it take its course. I'm not there yet. Last week, Kevan only got a couple of plays in and he had to come out. It's kind of hard to go off that."

Sprains, Strains and A Weekend of Rain: Why the 49ers offense may struggle Sunday night

By Marc Adams

It could get ugly. Not just the weather, although it is expected to be ugly this weekend in the Bay Area, but also the San Francisco 49ers offense. The 49ers have lost three games in a row, and seem to be struggling to "find themselves." The team's offense lacks identity right now. And this Sunday, on a soggy Levi's Stadium field, they likely will continue to struggle. But the 49ers won't just be battling the Indianapolis Colts. They will also be fighting sprains, strains and a whole lot of rain. First the weather. Lawrence Karnow, Chief Meteorologist of KRON-TV, was a guest on The Papa and Lund Show on KNBR Radio today to talk about Sunday's weather. He is predicting a big storm for the

Move over San Francisco Giants and their 107-win season. The 49ers are coming off their much-needed bye week and will face the Indianapolis Colts tonight at Levi's Stadium on Sunday Night Football. While it certainly felt good that the Dodgers were eliminated Saturday, it's time to get to the real action: an injury-ravaged San Francisco 49ers team. With a bye week during Week 6, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was able to heal the calf contusion that kept him out of San Francisco's Week 4 and 5 losses to the Seahawks and Cardinals, respectively. While Trey Lance is still healing from the knee sprain he suffered in his first NFL start, Garoppolo and nickel cornerback K'Waun Williams were able to get back on the practice field and are set to start Sunday

San Francisco 49ers players aren't around their Santa Clara headquarters right now because the team is on its bye week. However, they will return next week to begin preparations for the Indianapolis Colts. The off time is a good opportunity to listen to analysts like Greg Cosell, who joined KNBR today and shared his thoughts on rookie quarterback Trey Lance's first start this past weekend, a 17-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. What did the respected long-time analyst think of the 21-year-old's starting debut? Lance ran the football 16 times for 89 yards, which was a bit unexpected considering head coach Kyle Shanahan had said that fans could expect the rookie looking more like a quarterback and less like a running back in the game,

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 7 contest against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Tackle Trent Williams, quarterback Trey Lance, and defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw have missed three consecutive practices. Williams suffered an ankle sprain during the 49ers' Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Kyle Shanahan repeated what he said on Thursday, that the veteran tackle tweaked the injury during Monday's practice. The final decision on Williams will go all the way up to game time, said the coach. For now, he has been ruled "doubtful." Rookie Jaylon Moore will start if
