49ers win NFC West and secure a bye week

Dec 30, 2012 at 4:44 PM--

With the 27-13 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, the San Francisco 49ers won their second straight NFC West title, securing at least one home game during the NFC playoffs.

However, they got a little more good news after the game when the Minnesota Vikings pulled off a 37-34 victory over the Green Bay Packers, sending the Vikings to the playoffs and elevating the 49ers to the #2 seed, giving them a bye week.

The 49ers will await the strongest winner of the wildcard round as the weakest winner will head to Atlanta to face the Falcons, who are the #1 seed in the NFC.

For those that followed the Vikings-Packers game, Adrian Peterson was 9 yards short of the all-time rushing record.

While the rest of the media believes that the New York Jets drafting quarterback Zach Wilson of BYU to be a near-certainty, Seth Galina of Pro Football Focus doesn't sound too convinced of that. The analyst feels there may be a smokescreen in play, masking New York's true target—Justin Fields of Ohio State. Galina took a look at the NFC West and created a mock draft for the entire division. In it, he has the Jets taking Fields, and Wilson falling to the No. 3 spot, where San Francisco pounces. "There is a very real chance that we have been fed and will continue to be fed the proverbial

Peter King of NBC Sports was the first to report that San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch would be in attendance for the second pro days of both Justin Fields of Ohio State and Trey Lance of North Dakota State. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media confirmed that report this morning. #OSU QB Justin Fields has his second Pro Day on Wednesday and

Justin Fields of Ohio State will hold a second pro day workout on Wednesday. Five days later, Trey Lance of North Dakota State will take part in his second. Both are trying to ensure that they are selected ahead of Mac Jones of Alabama. Trevor Lawrence of Clemson is expected to be drafted No. 1 overall. The New York Jets are expected to select Zach Wilson of BYU at No. 2. Assuming San Francisco targets a quarterback, that leaves Jones, Fields, and Lance as San Francisco's choices at No. 3. Jones is the overwhelming favorite to be the pick if you ask members of the national media. Fans would much prefer the more athletic and higher ceilinged prospects in Fields or Lance. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch chose to attend Jones'

The San Francisco 49ers traded multiple first-round picks and a third-rounder next year to move up to the No. 3 spot in this month's draft. Soon after, quarterback Mac Jones of Alabama became the favorite to be selected by head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch. Members of the national media has started to back off a bit from proclaiming that scenario to be a near-lock. While they still declare Jones the favorite, no one is ready to admit that they are 100 percent certain what the 49ers' brass will do come April 29. "I think they have an open mind right now," ESPN's Adam Schefter recently told NBC Sports Bay Area. "I think they go into this
