49ers' Jeff Wilson: Trey Lance was ready to prove critics wrong before injury

By David Bonilla

"We got your back," San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner told Trey Lance after the young quarterback was helped onto a cart following his ankle injury this past weekend. "I'll be back," Lance responded. This year was supposed to be an on-the-job learning season for Lance, who started just two games during his rookie 2021 campaign. Instead, this year's in-game development was cut short after less than five quarters of play. Jimmy Garoppolo takes over at quarterback, and the 49ers remain a competitive team thanks to the veteran's experience and the roster's talent level. Still, the loss of Lance stings. Young landed with Tampa Bay via a supplemental draft after forcing his way out of the USFL, which ceased operations soon after. The quarterback went on to play 19 games with the Buccaneers from 1985 until 1986, going 3-16 as a starter. "That's when I was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, who was an equally bad team," Young shared on the Rich Eisen Show. "And I had made a great relationship with Hugh Culverhouse, the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the time, a trusted relationship. And he had told

The sooner everyone moves on from the 49ers' dreadful 11-10 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night the better. But first, let's tie up some loose ends to come from Sunday's postgame interviews. Much of the postgame discussion surrounded the performance of the 49ers' offense, which was poor enough to squander a defensive effort that held the Broncos' offense to just nine points.
