The San Francisco 49ers are 4-0. After defeating the Denver Broncos 24-14 in Week 4, San Francisco now heads back on the road for one of the most important games on its early-season schedule: an NFC West matchup against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.
Seattle enters Week 5 at 3-1, and this won't simply be another road game. It's a chance for the 49ers to stay undefeated while building early separation from one of their biggest divisional threats.
The 49ers have won six of their last eight regular-season meetings against Seattle, including four straight at Lumen Field.
Here are three keys for San Francisco to keep that streak—and its undefeated season—alive.
1. Take Away JSN
To slow Seattle's offense, the 49ers start with wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Through four games, Smith-Njigba has caught 32 passes for 481 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 15 yards per reception.
He's not simply Seattle's most productive receiver. He's the player San Francisco cannot allow to control this game.
Smith-Njigba has developed into a legitimate threat from anywhere in the formation. His ability to win outside has become particularly dangerous, making it harder for defenses to treat him as merely a slot receiver. That means the 49ers need a plan.
Challenge him at the line. Change the coverage picture. Give the secondary help when necessary and force Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold to find another answer.
Most importantly, don't allow the easy explosive play. That's especially important at Lumen Field, where one big play can energize the crowd and completely change the feel of the game.
Seattle has other weapons who can make plays. Make them prove they can beat you. Somebody else can beat me. JSN can't.
2. Don't Feed the Monster
Seattle's defense doesn't need any help. So don't give it any.
The Seahawks forced four turnovers in their 30-23 Week 4 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, including two interceptions of quarterback Justin Herbert. That's exactly the type of game San Francisco needs to avoid.
Fortunately, Brock Purdy has taken exceptional care of the football through four weeks. Purdy enters Week 5 with 1,007 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and just one interception. Even more impressive, he hasn't been sacked this season.
That formula shouldn't change in Seattle. Keep Purdy clean, use Christian McCaffrey, and stay balanced. Use motion and play action to create favorable looks instead of letting Seattle's defense dictate the game. And when the explosive play isn't there, don't force it.
A punt isn't always a bad possession on the road. A turnover that gives Seattle a short field and wakes up Lumen Field? That's different.
San Francisco has enough offensive talent to make Seattle defend the entire field. There's no reason to turn this into a game where Purdy has to play hero ball.
Protect the football and make the Seahawks earn every yard. Don't feed the monster.
3. Silence the 12s
There are road games. Then there's Seattle. The crowd at Lumen Field has always been part of the challenge, especially when these two NFC West rivals meet.
The easiest way to handle it? Don't give the crowd anything to celebrate. That starts early. Sustain drives, convert third downs, avoid pre-snap penalties, and finish drives with touchdowns.
Defensively, get off the field and don't allow Seattle to string together explosive plays. The longer San Francisco controls the game, the less the environment matters.
And the 49ers shouldn't walk into Seattle intimidated by the building. They've won four consecutive regular-season games at Lumen Field. They've been there before. They've won there before. Now, they need to do it again.
This is also the 49ers' first chance to make a significant early statement in the NFC West. San Francisco is undefeated, but Seattle is right behind them in the standings. A road win would strengthen the 49ers' position before the season reaches its midpoint.
Don't survive the environment. Control it.
Don't survive the noise. Silence it.
The Bottom Line
The formula for Week 5 is straightforward: Take away JSN, don't feed the monster, and silence the 12s.
Make Sam Darnold beat you without allowing Smith-Njigba to take over the game. Protect Purdy and the football against a Seattle defense that can create game-changing turnovers.
And when Lumen Field gets loud, respond by controlling the football game.
The 49ers are 4-0. Now they have an opportunity to walk into Seattle, beat a division rival, and return home 5-0. That's how you make an early statement in the NFC West.
