Mexico marched into the next round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32. The game took place at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Julian Quinones led the way for Mexico with a goal and an assist in the first half, while Raul Jimenez also found the net as the hosts took early control of the contest.
Ecuador struggled to respond to Mexico's attacking pressure and a late red card to Piero Hincapie summed up a disappointing evening for the visitors. No wonder this win continued Mexico's winning streak, securing a place in the Round of 16.
While the Mexicans were producing on the field, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner was creating his own buzz in the stands. The four-time All-Pro attended the match wearing a custom Mexico national team jersey with his signature number 54.
Broadcast cameras and fans repeatedly caught Warner shouting and cheering throughout the game, while some videos shared online showed him chanting "Vamos México!" as he celebrated the big moment. Warner also energized the fans and supporters, adding an electric atmosphere inside Estadio Azteca.
In a viral on-camera moment, Warner shouted, "Mexico City, DUUUB CITYYY! Vamos," and "Letssss gooo!!"

Warner's support for Mexico is a personal aspect. He is one of the NFL's premier linebackers at present; his mother is of Mexican descent, and his paternal side is African and Panamanian. He once carried a Mexican flag onto the field during an NFL game in Mexico City.
In the meantime, Mexico kept its dream World Cup campaign alive. The hosts have now won four matches without conceding a goal. They will be waiting for either England or the Democratic Republic of Congo DR in the Round of 16 at the Mexico City Stadium. Though not favorites, Ecuador, too, was a promising side; in Group E, they defeated Germany 2-1 in the Group stage.
Away from Soccer, the 49ers' star is preparing for this year's NFL season. Training camp is still weeks away, but expectations remain high for the leader of the 49ers' defense. Warner was considered a long-shot candidate for the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year award after his season was cut short due to a season-ending ankle injury. Before the injury, Warner was performing at an elite level, with 51 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries, and one fumble recovery in six games.
Pro Football Focus also graded him as the NFL's top-rated linebacker during that stretch, highlighting his impact against the run and his overall influence on San Francisco's defense.
The 49ers have also been in the news because of George Kittle's rehabilitation from a torn Achilles, with former safety Donte Whitner, per El-Balad, questioning the tight end's participation in football drills at Tight End University before receiving full medical clearance.
However, Mexico's win over Ecuador was one of the 2026 FIFA World Cup's memorable evenings for their supporters. On the same day, France defeated Sweden 3-0 and will face Paraguay in the next round, while Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 and will face Brazil in the Round of 16.
Warner was clearly one of the supporters who went home happy. With El Tri advancing to the next round and Warner entering the NFL season healthy once again, it was a successful day for his national pride and for the player who hopes to lead San Francisco back into contention later this year.
