San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Friday morning and was asked to reflect on the ongoing Brandon Aiyuk saga. The team recently placed the wide receiver on the reserve/left squad list, officially ending his chances of returning this season and likely signaling the end of his 49ers career.
Lynch made it clear he isn't interested in revisiting the topic—at least not right now.
"I think I'll do reflecting when the season's over," Lynch said. "But right now, we're just focused on Indianapolis, and our squad that is together right now. There'll be plenty of time to kind of unravel that situation.
"But right now, we're really focused on a 10-4 team that's been extremely resilient and together, and it's been fun to watch. And we've got more work to do, and we're really focused on the task at hand."
That task is clinching a playoff spot. The 49ers can do just that Monday night with a road win over the Indianapolis Colts.
San Francisco's postseason outlook shifted Thursday night when the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Los Angeles Rams in a dramatic overtime finish. The result reshaped the NFC West race, putting Seattle in control of the conference's No. 1 seed.
Still, Lynch stressed that playoff math and seeding scenarios are secondary. While the 49ers could claim the top seed by winning out—including a Week 18 victory over Seattle—none of it matters if they don't take care of business first.
"That was some game, just back and forth," Lynch said of the thrilling Seahawks-Rams matchup. "Two really good teams. Two teams you have a lot of respect for."
Lynch praised the two organizations, acknowledging his respect for each. While he enjoyed watching the Thursday night showdown and knows what it means for his squad, he emphasized that the 49ers' focus remains narrow.
"One thing I learned a long time ago is just focus on yourself, and focus on the task at hand," Lynch said. "And right now, for us, that's Indy, and nothing else. We know that if we beat Indianapolis, at Indy, that we're in the playoffs. And you get in the tournament, you've got a shot.
"And then, improving seeding and all that, that's something you can focus on later. But right now, it's just about beating Indianapolis, and it's going to be a tough and tall task. We saw them go into Seattle last week and give them everything they can handle."
The conversation turned to the possibility of the 49ers playing a Super Bowl at Levi's Stadium—a scenario that would carry special meaning for Lynch and the organization.
"Oh, of course your thoughts go there," Lynch admitted, "but then, you kind of snap back to what's important now. And what's important now is throwing all our focus towards the Indianapolis Colts and Philip Rivers."
