San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk may be nearing the end of his tenure in the Bay Area. That became a growing assumption after news broke of the team voiding his 2026 guaranteed salary—a move that still hasn't been fully explained.
However, ESPN reported that the 49ers were frustrated with Aiyuk for missing offseason rehab appointments, which may have contributed to the decision.
"It takes a lot of things to get a contract voided," head coach Kyle Shanahan recently said. "Honestly, I've never dealt with that in my career or been in any building that's had that. So it was unusual, but that's stuff that I can't get into right now."
The unusual contract move sparked immediate speculation about Aiyuk's future, with many wondering whether the star receiver has already played his final snap in red and gold.
Should the 49ers ultimately cut ties, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler believes Aiyuk would instantly become one of the "top-shelf" wide receivers available in free agency.
"His turbulent past two years in San Francisco must be accounted for, but he's only 27 and has a transferable skill -- he's an elite route runner, assuming he becomes healthy enough to still beat corners," Fowler wrote.
As for potential landing spots, Fowler sees a strong fit on the East Coast with Aiyuk reuniting with a close friend.
"One team to potentially watch for Aiyuk is Washington," Fowler shared. "He is close with quarterback Jayden Daniels, his former teammate at Arizona State. And general manager Adam Peters -- a John Lynch disciple from his time in San Francisco -- understands the Aiyuk experience well."
Washington's interest may hinge on what the Commanders decide to do with Deebo Samuel, another former 49ers wideout set to hit free agency. Their interest in Aiyuk will depend heavily on their financial situation and long-term plans—if any—for Samuel.
Aiyuk replacements in the 2026 NFL Draft
If the 49ers move on from Aiyuk, they could be heavily scouting first-round wide receiver options in the 2026 NFL Draft. ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid weighed in on potential fits for Kyle Shanahan's offense and believes next year's receiver class is loaded with talent.
"One common trait the Niners look for in wide receiver prospects is the ability to pick up yards after the catch," Reid wrote. "And that means KC Concepcion (Texas A&M) and Chris Bell (Louisville) would be two realistic options at the back end of Round 1 -- the 49ers are projected to pick No. 28, per ESPN's Football Power Index -- and both would make a lot of sense. Concepcion has 423 yards after the catch this season, while Bell has 378."
Concepcion (5-11, 190) has posted 57 catches for 886 yards and nine touchdowns this season. Bell (6-2, 220) has recorded 72 receptions for 917 yards and six touchdowns, making both players intriguing possibilities if San Francisco seeks an Aiyuk successor.
